Upgrading to 1.9 questions

Hi ETC.  If the amount and scope of changes warrant calling this upgrade ONLY 1.9, the changes for 2.0 must be huge!  WOW!

I do have some questions about 1.9, however:

With the [Swap] key being used for [Tab], is there a replacement key?  Do I contact you, or my local dealer?

Updating the firmware for 2x10 wings: I have multiple 2x10 wings on a console (hardwired).  the upgrade instructions says to repeat for each 2x10.  Does this mean I need to run the firmware upgrade twice on one console?  How does the console know which 2x10 is left to upgrade?

I've looked at the 1.9 video on Youtube, and I understand (sort of) HOW to use the new [Update] commands.  I'm lost on WHY or WHEN (conceptually) for these changes.  Can someone give me some examples of why people wanted these?  Is {By-type} just faster than building a group of the same instruments, and then dialing in the CP for all of them? (I don't have much in the way of DMX devices).

Thanks.

    Hi Andrew,

I'll try to enlighten you further on these points:

A couple of real life scenarios for the update commands.

Ref Only - Lets say you are mid rehearsal, the director is working a scene on stage and you have been asked to stay in the current cue while he/she talks through things with the actors. Meanwhile the LD takes the opportunity to tidy up a few ML positions from earlier in the show. So you recall the Palette/Preset for these positions. Tweak the focus and update. Here you could do a selective store, eg Chan x Update Focus Palette y. Thus avoiding updating the cue which you have live on stage. In 1.9, you can just use the syntax 'Update Refs Only'. You will see in the update window that when you select 'refs only' the Cue will disappear from the Update dialog, and you will just be left with the Palette/Preset that you have modified.

Last Ref - Many users have requested this feature as they are used to working in this way on other consoles.

Lets say you are sitting in Q5, which has a special Stage Left in Colour Palette 'Light Blue'. You decide to change this to Colour Palette 'Lavender'. All good, except CP 'Lavender' needs a little more Magenta. So you add a little more magenta and go to update. In 1.8 if you were to Update Enter (Update All) the result would be to update the cue, and CP 'Light Blue'. In this instance you deliberately changed the colour to Lavender, and tweaked it slightly. The desired effect would be to modify Q 5 with Lavender instead of Blue, and also modify the Lavender CP.

So, we use the Last Ref command, the Last Reference being CP Lavender.

    Does this make sense?

We have assumed that Last Ref is a choice which a programmer would make depending on their personal style, as we do with Break Nested, hence the setup options. They appear in the update window for those occasional times when you need to break your normal 'update style'.

Jonathan's example of By Type palettes is a good one. Also, let's assume you have 10 VL1000's in your rig. You mix your Light Blue for your special, record the colour palette adding By Type in the syntax. This CP then contains a matching Light Blue for your other 9 VL1000's without any more work.

I hope this helps, let us know if you have any other 1.9 questions!

    Thanks

    Graham.

  • Thanks, Graham, et al.

I loaded 1.9 onto the RVI (not attached to the network) to look at it.  A few questions:

In the cue list screen (on the RVI), what's the lock on the top left corner do?

You can now double click on the direct selects, and that posts Recall From ## in the command line.  Why?  If you command a channel to Direct Select IP #4, (and the light intensity changes to that IP), how's that different from a quick Recall From command?

What's the difference between a Mark (v 1.8) where a moving light moves to a position in a dark cue prior to an intensity cue, and a Dark Move?

I noticed that Alt Z on teh keyboard DOESN"T produce a Goto Cue 0 command.  Shift G makes a Goto Cue command.   YEs, Scroll lock is OFF (the Old On).

    thanks very much.

  • With regards to Re-Call from;

When you rec-call from something, you recall hard values and not the actual pallet where as by type pallets you are in the actual pallet their-for updating the pallet will update everything.

EDIT: Im trying to get the re-call from by dbl clicking the Direct Selects but cannot reproduce this? Am i missing something?

    Hi Johnathan,

There is an Enable/Disable Toggle for this function in the Desk Setup>Displays screen.

    Graham.

  • Since the only dangling item here seems to be the Tab keycap, you can contact either tech support or your local regional office to receive a replacement cap.

    Thanks,

  • Thanks to all for the answers up the various 1.9 and concepts changes.

On the playback display screen, there is a padlock (similar to the CIA).  What will it do? (I need to write the paperwork, and can't find the time to upgrade the consoles yet).

If I adjust the size of the columns in the playback display, will they remain that size when I tab back?  When I power up the next time?

Will column sizing changes be recorded in the snap shots?

Anyway I can hide columns entirely?

What's the difference between a Dark Move and a Mark?

monitor set-up scenario (bear with me).

we have 2 monitors, one being a touch screen.  Given the set-up, the touch screen is on the right, and i've [Swap]ped the screens so Channel 1 and the Direct Selects are on the touchscreen on the right.  The CIA and the higher channels are on the left screen.  Since the [Swap] button has been re-purposed, I'll need to swap the video output cables for this arrangment.

My question:  when you choose to open a Direct Select, or other things, you have options for Lower Left, Upper Left, in CIA, or mainscreen.  Is there a plan to re-label those choices, since what is defined as <lower left> is relative to the user's set-up?

Will the colour picker, ML control, or the direct select become a Tab?  I'd love to tab to a full screen of Direct Select buttons (4 x 20).

    Thanks very much
