Saving locally while in client mode

I was wondering if I could get some clarification as to were the data is when I am connected to the ION in client mode (1.9 build 54).

I noticed that when I tell the desk to save from the client that a save is performed on the master and I get a success message on the master and a FAIL on the client.

Not a big deal because the show is save on the master.

Once disconnected I booted up in ION offline (not client) and saw that my show was there but no files were on the hard drive.

So is there a way to setup the client so that when the show is saved it will save on both hard drives?

Is it reasonable to asume that when connected as a client that my actions are backed up in the event of a catastrophic failure, power outage kick out etc.?

In my carear I have only lost a show once from an express because I had not saved it to a disk. But once was enough that I make sure at the end of each tech rehearsal to save a backup to a USB stick just in case an ACME anvil gets dropped on the console.

I know that it would be best for me to purchase an ION RPU so that I have a full backup system. But right now I have not been able to purchase the touch screens I want. So an RPU is on my list but it will have to wait.

Thanks for the help and input.

  • Have you tried "Save as" and finding the local hard drive?

I've successfully saved to my USB key on the RVI.  I really love that I can save my backup without having to run to the booth and bug the programmer.

  • Hmmm no that will work for creating my backup each night so thats good.

As for the client being a bakup in the event of a catastrophic board crash.... like if an elephant steps on the console?

  • As I understand it: When the Ion is on, it is constantly 'backing-up' to the Ion internal hard drive. Meaning, if I start programming at 6 AM, and at 9 AM, my Ion gets turned off in a bad way, and I had NOT gone through the steps to manually save my work yet, when I start the Ion again, it will have 'most' or more probable, all of my 3 hours worth of programming. (Obviously, some results may vary!!)

With my flash drive on the face plate, I can 'Save To' the flash drive when I feel like it. Show file then is saved in 2 places. I have not yet set up my computer as a 'client'. I look forward to it. Maybe it can be saving the show file (manually or auto) too. Mainly, I think it will be great to get more screen(s) real estate!.

If, due to some misfortune (lol, you mentioned anvils & elephants, nice visuals) your console is broken, you will NOT be able to run the show with your computer. You DO NEED a console or RPU, not just ETC ‘Client’ on your computer.

I like the new Tabs feature, but I was wondering how to swap my screens when I heard about Tabs. Sure enough, I can’t see how to get my Channels on the Left monitor, and my PSD Cues on the Right monitor. It isn’t the way I have had it in the past, but I’m completely changing up my console layout, so Id like to be able to try it.

  • Gern, the show data is retained in persistent storage, which isn't really the same as storing to the hard drive.  But yes, this is the reason when you cycle power that the show comes back in the same location is was before.  But, "save early, save often" is a good motto.

There is no longer a swap function on Ion.  To move screens to another monitor, the following can be done:

Put "focus" on Live - Tab 1.  (This can be done by just pressing Live, hitting the Tab key (labeled swap on your desk) until Tab 1 is in focus (gold highlight) or press [Tab] + [1].  Once focus is on Live, press and hold Tab and the right page/arrow key.    This will move Live to the other monitor.  To move the PSD, put focus on Tab 2.  Press and hold Tab and the right/ page/arrow key.  This will move the PSD to the other monitor.

As new tabs are opened, by default they will open on Monitor 1.  They can be moved to the other monitor in the same way.

    Hope that helps.

  • OK So the show data that was transferred int he persistent memory of the client (MAC V1.9 Build 54) was not able to be "saved as". I have not been able to try to save while in "Client" only "Offline" since I left the console at the theatre and I am off working on other projects.

What happens is I click "Save As" I can see the local hard drive and I tell it to save but then I get a "FAILED" message. I was able to export as ASCII but not able to save the Data.

    Thanks for the help!

FYI the TABS and new UPDATE really wonderful, have not used query on the ION yet but thanks for that as well.

  • Randall, can you send your log files from the device you tried to do a "save as" from and email to eos@etcconnect.com?    Let us know what date/time this happened?

    Thanks much!

  • Yep, We got them. Thanks.  The show archive path, which is configurable in the shell was incorrectly set..  Clicking on the [Restore Default] corrects the path.
    thanks again.
