Pan-Tilt movement with speed curve?

Hi,
I'm trying to have a pan+tilt movement of a moving-head not at linear spead, but rather in a more gentle manner: starting slow, speeding up, decelerating before reaching its final position.
I've assigned a curve (902) to Pan and Tilt in the Patch window / attributes, but there is no visible effect. It still moves at linear speed, starts abruptly and stops abruptly at its final position. I've trying moving manually, as well as per focus palettes.
What am I doing wrong?

  • Hi, the best way to apply a curve to an attribute seems to record a part for your cue and apply a curve to it (cue part --> attributes -->curve). I tried and it works Wink

For single-part cues, the calculation applies only to intensity. For multipart cues, however, the curve applies to all parameters in the part."

  • Unfortunately This is not working for me.
    (Disclaimer, the Theatre I'm at the moment has very annoyingly limited working hours, so I can only look at numbers in the software right now. Haven't tested with a real light.)

    But in any case, what about none-preprogrammed movements (not cue'd)? That is where I was coming from. When just reacting and wanting to move to an FP and a given point?
    And what is assigning a curve specifically to Pan and Tilt good for? (In Patch window Channel->Attributes->Curves.) It doesn't seem to do anything.

  • This does work but it's probably the wrong solution for what you're wanting to do.

    Just to make sure I used sACNview to check the output, in this case of a Pan parameter

    What's catching you by surprise is that the curve is used over the whole range of the parameter not with dynamic start and end points according to the range you're actually using for the current transition. So for my first screenshot I had to move the Pan parameter from -270 to +270.

    In your case of curve 902

    When going from e.g. Pan 0 to Pan 135 (assuming Pan max is 270, you would get this

    which is more or less linear.

    I don't think there is a solution to achieve what you want unless you're using cues, in which case a curve on a cue part would be the solution.

    You need to see DMX values in your live tab to check your curves, just press [ABOUT] + [LIVE] [LIVE] .

    That was indeed a misunderstanding. So, curves simply are mathematical functions, which can be applied in two very different contexts/ways:

    1. For the most part they work as value transformations over the full range of the value. Completely independent of time.
    Like classic dimmer curves. Makes sense.

    2. Only when it comes to Cue Parts the meaning changes, it become: value transformation over time. And in the value range moved through. Which is what I was looking for.

    If I may say that, this could be explained better in the manual. It starts by describing curves as "relationship between the timing of a fade and the output level .." which send me the wrong direction. As in most cases time/timing is exactly not a factor. Simply transforming input value to output value independent of time.

    And in this light you are right, outside of cue parts it seems impossible to have smooth motion (without abrupt start/stop).

  • Thanks for your suggestions. Back in the theatre now, with a device in front of me, it turns out, that Cue parts do work indeed :)

    Just what is shown in numbers or under ML controls is untransformed. Indeed, the curve application is only reflected in raw dmx values (under (Chan selected)->About->Patch or in sACN output viewer).
