Record cue data by reference

Is there a way to record data by reference to another cue so the data will update when I change the original cue?  I know I can use a preset, but I don't need a preset and it's just one more thing to keep track of.  I'm think of a syntax like "Group 1 at Preset Cue 6", but that doesn't work.  "Group 1 at Cue 6" doesn't work either.  Is there a syntax to do this or is it just impossible?  I don't want to Recall From; I want a reference, not just the data.

  • cue data is not nestable.  You have to use a preset or palette for reference data. put the data in the first cue in a preset and reference the preset in the second cue.

  • While programming, I often use "Recall-From Cue xx" because I already programmed something I liked.  This works fine until I need to go back and change the original look.  Then I have to remember everywhere I pulled the value in.  Still, that's less work than creating a Preset for every single place I might pull a value from, just in case I might ever need to change it.

My philosophy on coding (light board or computer) is to let the computer do as much of the rote work as possible,  If I do it, I always find a way to screw it up, but computers are really good at keeping track of trivia.  I was hoping there might be a way to do it by reference since that's common in coding.  Unfortunately not. Thanks!!

  • presets and palettes are the lighting version of reference data.  if you find you need to recall from another cue just build it into a preset at that point and put the preset in both cues.  Then you are making just the reference data when you need it and not making it for everything.  If you are using tracking to its full extent then you should be in pretty good shape.
