What to buy?

Hello all

We are looking at the Eos as our new console. Just wondering what else I need to get?

Currently we have an Obsession2 DPS, video nodes, Net2 nodes and a MDR unit to merge Unison and console house light control.

I'm thinking a full EOS, one RVI, one Gateway node. Also I would like to have one maybe two laptops to use as stage and tech table remotes/LD screens.

So what have I missed? Thoughts on the laptop idea?

Thanks,

  • If you're looking for the redundancy of the Obsession DPS, you might want an RPU (remote Processing unit) as well.  Basically it's an EOS in a box, minus the user interfaces.  I have a client here in the bay area who is doing just that.  The RPU lives in the booth's equipment rack, and is the Primary controller, while the EOS facepanel is the Backup, and they have both an RVI and a client dongle for a PC to allow two remote users to either monitor or work within the system.

I haven't used the laptops with the client dongle yet, just used a laptop in mirror mode only, so you want to make sure you get the client dongle as part of your package, otherwise the laptop is just a remote monitor with no user input.   There was another post on the forums about client dongles and EOS a while back, but I can't recall when that was, but it was regarding registering your EOS and receiving a free gift from ETC, which at one time was a client dongle.

    Good luck.

  • Hello Dennis,

Thanks for the heads up on the client dongle, I do indeed want some control, mirror mode will do for the stage manager, lol. I don't think we can do a RPU, as I will need to replace my current Net 2 nodes, monies being the factor there...it would be nice though. Maybe an RPU and no RVI, that sounds like it would work.

  • Just so you know, EOS can output EDMX so your existing Net2 nodes will still work.

I would suggest a RVI for the stage manager- this can be set to a different user and then the screens won't change as the programmer operates the console.  Also rackmountable if you have a SM rack.

We use a laptop and external monitor for the tech table- using a dongle you can mirror the console's displays (without a dongle, you can only mirror the master device and we have the RPU as master and console as backup).

There are many different ways to integrate EOS into existing systems.  It might be worth giving your local dealer or ETC rep a call as they can explain all of the options.
