Parking LED Power

My theater recently got Colorsource LED Cyc Lights, when they were installed we were advised to Park the power channels every time we started the board (ETC Element) and unpark when we were shutting down for the day. My question is, can we leave the Power parked all the time? If they are parked when we shut down, will the lights continue to draw power?

At my old theater, we never bothered with Parking/Unparking power for the LEDs so I'm curious which is best practice.

  • That's a good question, that's not esy to answer without knowing your system. When you shutdown your console, provided that you don't have a backup console that keeps running, there is no DMX being sent anymore. But depending on how your system is set up there could be what's called DMX Hold. This would keep the control signal to whatever supplies the power to your LEDs going on the last levels.

The easiest way of finding out how your system is set up would be to turn off the console while the power control channels are stil parked. Observe if the power to your LEDs turns off. Please note that DMX Hold functions often include a time, after that time is over that last value would be released. So even if the power stays on you would have to check again after some time.

  • Based on what I've observed before when accidentally leaving lights on and shutting down, there is a DMX hold of a few minutes. I'll have to do some more tests with the LEDs. Thank you!
