Brightness Settings

Hello...

Working today on a very low light level show which involves getting the console into as dark a state as it can be during a performance.

This has revealed an interesting thing on a Ti: if you set the face panel backlight to zero , the key backlights generally go off - except live, blind and park if anything's parked. You could argue about whether this is correct behaviour or not.

But the more particular one is that if you then don't touch the console for a while and it goes into its 'standby' mode where it dims the displays, the key backlights all come back on again. This is wrong.

Also for discussion: on this show long sequences of it run as auto-follow cues, which is why I'm not touching the keyboard - but I'd argue that in this case the console is still 'active'.

  • I take it that 'Extinguish' Mode doesn't suit what you are doing?  Brightness Presets and Extinguish mode can be called from a Macro, so you can trigger them on a Direct Select, when a cue fires, or even with timecode. The fact that the [Displays] button pulses to indicate this mode is enabled is a bit annoying, I put something over the [Displays] button.

  • We used extinguish more (on a macro button) a great deal during tech. But in show running I needed to see running cues, but screens-active mode to allow that on the console (a Ti) emitted too much light, so we ended up with the desk shrouded in black masking - the left hand and half of the right hand screen covered up, the encored display covered, any remaining buttons that lit up covered, and a big 'hood' over the console so that the remaining light from the right-hand screen was kept from bouncing off nearby ceilings etc.

(For context, this was a show where we'd often end up arguing whether 7% or 7.1% was the correct level for a light).

It would be interesting to have a variant of dark mode that left the current and pending cues visible somewhere.

There's an interesting quirk with extinguish mode as well, actually: our extinguish macro then returned the console to live (so you could, if necessary, bring up channels while extinguished), but when you then pressed 'display' to wake everything up, sometimes it would be in the live screen but sometimes it would still be in the brightness control panel.. Plus sometimes the soft-keys reappear on screen, and as noted in another post, any open Augment3D display doesn't seem to get hidden.
