ION network question

Good morning. My question is can you use an Expression 3 as a backup for the ION? Right now I am running an ION with 95% conventional lamps and the rest movers. Very few. Anyhow my desk is plugged right into the dimmer racks. Id like to have some sort of backup. I have an Expression 3 spare desk.

You won't be able to run it as a tracking backup. You would need another Ion or RPU for that, as well as network DMX gateways (such as ETC's Net3 Gateways, or Pathport nodes) to provide the outputs.

Something that you could do is export the file as ASCII and then import it into the Expression and then link the two together via MSC and if you had a DMX A/B switch in line, it's a fairly functional backup solution, certainly not the most elegant, but it's something. The information for the movers probably wouldn't make it thru the ASCII transfer.

Thanks guys. I didnt think to just save the file and transfer. This is in a small TV studio so buying a second desk aint gonna happen. The movers are not really a concern I was just looking for a quick OH CRAP backup. That should work fine.
