Rant: Group Cue

This just happened to me live, in our break cue.

Selected two groups via direct selects. Noticed I only need the first group. Cleared once, when I should have cleared twice (Which is totally my bad).

In the command line was "Group X + Group". When I hit "Out", this command line auto-terminated to Group X + Group Cue X @ Out, which turned off everything, including house lights and worklights.

"Group Out" terminates in a syntax error, which to me looks like a safeguard to not accidentally turn off everything. I feel like this should also be the default behaviour when selecting multiple groups, where the last group would auto-terminate to a Group Cue X, like in the example above. Especially when there's no visual indication in Tab 1 Live that everything in Cue X is selected, because the selection is not yet finished.

Additionally, since "Group Out" is a syntax error, I feel like "Group (Level Wheel down)" should also be protected. This, as well as every encoder move with "Group" in the command line, is currently not protected by default.

In my opinion, "Group" should throw a syntax error and never auto-terminate into Group Cue X with the only exception being "Group Enter" or "Group Cue".

I would like to know what you think. Is this a reasonable take?

Thanks.

  • I always get a syntax error for Group 1 + Group Out. Can you reproduce this? Is there another component to the reproducer I'm missing?

  • Hi. I'm just now back at the desk and did some detective work in the logs. You're totally right. "Group Out" does throw a syntax error in any case. Turns out, that what i was seeing is a Dimmer wheel move completing the channel select which was then able to be set at Out without any safeguards.

I can see that this is expected behavior but in the moment it was an unfortunate interaction between different things and seemed super strange.

Maybe it would be nice to have a setting in setup to disable "Complete Channel Select from event Digisteller 1". It has happened to me a few times in programming before that a accidental bump of the encoder wheels makes a bunch of stuff manual. If i had the choice, I'd rather just be forced to press enter to complete a selection.
