Multiple uses of an effect are merged when I save it in a cue

Hi folks,

I'm having an issue where using an effect separately on adjacent multi-cell devices and then saving it in a cue results in one instance of the effect running off all of the cells in the two fixtures.

Is this a bug? It seems non-intuitive to me that what I save in a cue is not played back the same when I run the cue.

My setup:

- EOS 3.3.6 running on an HP laptop

- Gadget II

- 2x Rock Saber (configured for 32 cells per unit) on channels 3 & 4

[3] [.] [Effect] [34] [Enter]

[4] [.] [Effect] [34] [Enter]

At this point, each Rock Saber is running the effect.

[Record] [Cue] [15] [Enter]

[GoTo Cue] [15] [Enter]

Now, the effect is stretched out across the 64 cells of the two Rock Sabers and it looks very different.

If it matters, the effects I've seen this with are Absolute effects.

Thanks,

David

  • This is currently expected behaviour, even if it's sometimes unwelcome.

Currently your best workarounds would be copying the effect so you're effectively running two different effects.

  • It looks like you have touched on a question I've had for some time.

More generically than the original question, are effects actually recorded with a cue?  Or are they just referenced?

    To be very specific...

Assume I create an effect and record a cue running that effect, then later use that same effect with a change (i.e. change the cycle time or scale) to record another cue.   It seems the change effects all cues "using" that effect.

Am I doing something wrong or are you saying in your answer to David... if I want to use the look of the effect with, say, 3 different cycle times (tempos), I need to record 3 effects?

PS... I know I can use an effect rate fader to change on the fly, but I'm an old white guy with no rhythm, so its best if I can prerecord.

  • hi

I'm not a developer but i work with eos daily and this is how i think it works. Effects seem to be attribute of a Cue and not a absolute value on a fixture. You can think of it like this. When you're storing Group X with Effect Y into Cue Z, you are telling eos, "in cue Z, run effect X with over selection X"

Effects, are essentially Effect Palettes. So if you edit them in Blind, the changes apply to all Show data. Just like editing a Color Palette.

If you want to do changes to how your effect runs in one cue only, you can use the Effect Status Display (Pressing Effect once in Live or opening [Tab 6]) to change values of your effect, without overwriting the underlying values, on a per cue basis.

  • Well, I'm not sure I understand your first 2 paragraphs, but pointing me to TAB 6 is exactly what I was looking for!

I guess I never explored it and never knew what it was for... Now I see even the manual says plainly that changes here impact only that instance of the effect.

    Thanks!
