Lamp off request?

I am the head electrician in a facility that sees use from many different groups, and cannot be there on a constant basis to oversee things.  We have been having an issue lately with people not lamping off or movers before powering down the console at the end of the day.  Would it be possible to have the console display a prompt when powering down that would ask if the user would like to lamp off all capable fixtures? Would this be useful to anyone?

I know even for myself after a long day it is easy to forget this one step and then I have to wait for the console to reboot or kill power to the fixtures while they are hot.

  • Mark,

Most moving lights will kill their lamps after a period of no DMX.  Perhaps if the operator has to hang around for an extra (unpaid) half hour to make sure the fixtures lamp off and cool down, they will remember to lamp off from the console next time :-)

I would recommend writing a lamp off macro and making sure that the operators run it before shut down.  It might be possible to do a macro that will save, lamp off and power down all at once- I just haven't tried to write one.

I don't remember if startup and shut down macro triggers (i.e. having a macro that would automatically run when console is started or shut down) are on the development list ...

The problem could be exaggerated based on the system.  For example, here we have a Net3 infrastructure with DMX nodes placed throughout the space, I can shut down the console, BUT the nodes are all still sending DMX (even though it’s a DMX value of all zeros) so our movers won’t shut down  after a period of no DMX because they are always getting some kind of DMX.

While I agree that the op should be able to get in the habit of doing a "proper" shut down, forgetting the first few times is anoying.  The trick, I would think, is finding a way for the console to know you are actually using movers in the show to give you the prompt.  You can't use patch, because often times, a "house patch" will have all of it's gear "pre-patched" but that doesn't mean it's in use....  If it's not really in use, we will see folks complaining that they can't stand the prompt slowing down the shut-down procedure.

I think once the ability to run a macro upon shut-down comes along, we would see this issue resolved.
