GM oddity spotted

Hello, was told of an issue that had occured on our ION earlier whilst I wasn't there, that i believe to be a bug.

Desk switched on with GM fader down, but the software believed it to be UP, and was ouputting values and behaving as per normal.

Does the desk not do a facepanel check on switch on, to realise positions of faders and buttons?

When the GM was lifted, apparently it snapped to zero, then made it's full travel to full as it should have done.

  • I think if the console is shut down with a cue up and the GM up, then after the console is powered down, the GM is moved to the down position, the console will start up in the Cue up & GM up setting. You must then reset the GM by taking it up & down. That's what I noticed earlier in 1.9, when running the console in my home office without a lighting rig. I haven't tried it with 1.9.1, as I'm installed on a show currently.

  • This is deliberate.
The GM is intentionally forced to Full to ensure that the lights are actually going to come on from initial boot of the console.

The fader must then be moved to match the 'real' GM level to take it down, so the user has to take deliberate action to get the 'lights won't come on' situation.

There's a lot of reasons for this, but probably the most obvious is that it makes it less likely that users are going to get frustrated and call us asking "Why won't the lights come on?", when it's because the GM fader got nudged to Zero before they started up and they hadn't noticed.

This is of course highly embarrassing for both ends of the phone call...
