It's aliiiive!

I have an ION (vs. 1.9) and I need to run shows "Freehand" or "on the fly" so to speak.  I noticed that when I selected a color effect (under vs 1.8) I could watch the color picker and notice the "dots" going around indicating what color the selected fixtures are at in any given time.  At that point I could adjust the attributes of the lights before bringing up the intensity and that way I could preset the look, going off what ever mood I'm picking up from the band.

Now, however, I'm given the option of seeing what the light is doing OR adjusting the attributes of the effect, but not both.  Tech support confirms this and I was wondering is there a work around in progress for this?

I also do musicals and plays so the structured part of the ION is great but more "on the fly" options couldn't hurt.

I also understand that there is a way to pick a color and wipe my finger through the color wheel allowing the selected fixtures to change color along with me, but so far I've had no luck.  Any help?

Thx,

Bill

  • Bill,

With the proper tabs setup on both monitors you can toggle back and forth between seeing what the light is doing (I am assuming you are referring to ML Controls) and the effects tab.  Whenever you loose the fixture selection you will have to reselect in order for ML controls to show you what is going on.

Once you have an effect running you can change your color selection (ex:Effect 914) in ML control or using the encoders and "modify" the look of the effect.

As far as picking a color on the wheel and not seeing it live...sounds like you might have the wrong fixture selected / mis-patch?

More info on the situation would be of help.

  • Seth,

Thx for the reply.  I guess what I was getting at was that jumping back and forth between adjusting the lights and seeing the lights takes time.  Lets say, for example, the band starts a slow mellow song.  You bring the LED's intensity down and select a hue/saturation fade.  Now you have to select the effects page and the running effect for the LED's and see the "dots" scrolling through the color wheel but, ratz, the effect is running too fast.  So now you go to modify the effect and the "dots" disappear, leaving you to guess on how much adjustment you need.  Now you select effect>effects> the effect that is running and, nope still too fast.  Repeat all the above then bring up the intensity.

What I would like is the ability to modify the effect to get exactly what I want while the intensity is down so the audience doesn't see adjustment in progress.

Now if the songs were all rehearsed in advance and the band never deviated or threw in a random song, then everything's great.   But in real life things happen, if all that makes sense.

Also being able to select a color on the color picker and scroll my finger across the board faster then I could do with an encoder would be a plus.

Hope this makes my question clearer.

  • Bill,

Sounds like the upcoming 1.9.5 version release will help you out greatly (sometime later this month).

One of the additions is the ability to load an effect or cue list on the fader wing and use the fader as a rate changer (just like you can use the fader as intensity control now on a cue list).  This will allow you to speed up or slow down an effect/cue list live as the song changes.

Hope this helps, other than the wait.

  • Seth,

Man that would be great! I look forward to it, and just in time for our musical / show season is right around the corner.   THX!
