importing a show from file

I have a designer that sent me a file called etcshow.dat and told me that it was an Obsession II file. I am trying to load it into my (brand new) Ion. What kind of file type am I looking for? Someone mentioned that I might have to open the file in the offline editor first and then re save it to get it to import over to the Ion - however I tried that  and couldn't get it to open there either.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Sam

  • Hi Sam,

I'm now sure where you are getting hung up, so I will give step-by-step instructions, and hopefully this will work for you.  If you have an Obsession II show, the procedure is as follows:

    1) Install Obsession Offline on a PC.  The latest build, v5.2.3, is available on the ETC website, http://www.etcconnect.com.

    2) Copy the Obsession show file to this directory on the PC:   C:\ETC\Obsn\Shows.

    3) Now start Obsession Off-Line, and go to the Setup screen.  Select 4 - Hard Drive Functions.  If your show is a valid Obsession II show, it should appear in the list.  If it does not, then it is likely that the show is Obsession I, and will need to be converted first.  (Tech Services can help you with that.)

    4) Select S5 - Read All.  You should now be able to verify that there is a show in memory.

    5) Click on File -> Write ASCII Show in the main offline window (it has the title bar that says "Obsession Off-Line").

    6) Now you should have a *.asc file in the C:\ETC|Obsn\Shows directory.  Copy this file onto a USB drive.

    7) Install the USB drive into your Ion and go to the browser.  Select File -> Import -> USITT ASCII -> Import  As Library/Custom Fixtures (your choice) and browse to the USB drive to select the file.

If this still doesn't work, please let us know and we will try to figure out what is going wrong.

  • Sam just FYI: Obsession II used Part 8 as the default part for updates (if you hit Update Enter without specifying a part in a part cue, the changes went into Part 8) but the Eos family uses Part 1 as the default part.  This can lead to some confusion down the line.

When I import shows from Obsession, I spend a few moments in Eos cleaning them up by swapping around the parts so Part 1 becomes Part 2 (or something) and Part 8 becomes Part 1.  This may or may not be applicable to your show, but I figured I'd add it on the end.
