setting up a client on my Ion

Question

So I'm an idiot and need a little help.... 
 Is there a simple tutorial that will walk me through networking my pc laptop (with freshly installed client software) to my Ion. I am planning on connecting the two directly with cat5 (no switch in between). The other thing is that when my vendor installed my Ion, he turned off all outputs except DMX (to prevent the network from bogging down with unnecessary traffic?), so I'd need to know which configurations to set there. And then I need a little help with setting I.P. addresses.

 You need to make sure that the Ion is running the static ip address as suggested in the table. To turn off the network is ridiculous because the system is designed to run network devices. Make sure the console is set up to be a DHCP server, that way your laptop (client) can get an address from the console. Otherwise, follow the table in the Wiki about how to set up a static ip for your client. 
 On a similar note, if you are running Vista or Win7, you should look at http://community.etcconnect.com/wikis/products/knowledgebase-eos-ion-element-client-and-windows-vista.aspx . This will describe how to get your client to connect up if you are having problems. 
 One more thing, I am not sure if the network port is self-switching, so you may want to make sure the CAT-5 cable is a crossover cable or buy a simple switch for like $20.
