How do you ?

Hi my names Matt and I work as a technician in a mid scale touring house.

I am used to programming a stand 520/300 but our 520 finally died recently and we bought an Ion to replace it after hearing lots of good  things about it.

When plotting there are a few things that I find frustrating about the ION and im sure im just going about things the wrong way.

Here is a list of things I would like to know , any help would be much apreciated !

1) When plotting what is the quickest way to get to black out ? At the moment I am pressing {go to cue} {out} but this fades to black at my default fade time.

2)On the strand there is a cut button then allows you to cut from one cue to the next .This is usefull for checking through the cues on a cue list after they have been plotted. I cant find  way of doing this on the ION which makes this whole processes very time consuming especially when you have a 30 mnute fade time !!

3) What is the quickest and easiest was to programme a simple chase ? The mehtod in the manual seems a little long winded .

4) Is there a quick way of making a channel "non dim" other then creating a curve and then assigning it to a channel?

5) If I soft patch to the incoming companys numbers to make focussing easier and then load the show onto our desk the patch seems to return to 1 to 1 . Is there way of avoiding this ?

6) I often build states using submasters if for example I bring up

sub 1 @50
sub 2 @70
and sub 7 @90

then record as cue one

Then if i want to modify this cue by decreasing  the intensity of  sub one ,   I pull the submater down it will stay at the recorded level BUT if I push it up the intesity will increase past the recorded level.

On the strand I would simply select the sub master , wheel it to the new level and  then re record the cue  is this possible on the ION.

At the moment I am having to look at the plan and  manually select all the channels recorded in that submaster and then change the intensity or go to black out and build the state again which kinda defeats the object of having sub masters in the first place !

I hope all this makes sense.

I think thats all for now although Ill probably remember about ten more things as soon as I post this !

If this is to much to ask and there is a person I could contact to find out these answers just let me know.

Cheers in advance

Matt

  • Hi Matt,

    Welcome to the forum.

The good news is that all of your questions are easily resolved, so here goes:

    1) The quickest way to create a blackout is to use {Select Active} [Out]. Select Active is a softkey on Ion and a hard key on Eos. To access the softkey on Ion hold down the [Select Last] key.

    2) There are a couple of options for cutting between cues. The first is to press the Fader Controls key, you will then see a Timing Disabled softkey. Hold this down while hitting the Go or Stop/Back button and you will snap between cues. Alternatively you can use the Goto Cue command. [Goto Cue] [Next] will cut you into the next cue in the default goto cue time as defined in Setup. You could also use the syntax [Goto Cue] [Next] [Time] [x] to insert your own timing.

    3) There are many different ways to create effects in Ion. It really depends on the type of effect you are trying to create. Could you give an example. When you get to grips with Ion effects you'll realise that they are far superior to the 500 series.

    4) You can assign non dims in patch. Select your channel, choose Type>Manufacturer>Generic>Non Dim@...

    5) I think what you are looking for here is the Merge function. You can than choose which sections of the showfile you want to merge in.

    6) I would suggest using the Group Sub function here. [Group] [Sub] [1] @50 will grab all the channels in Sub 1 and give them a manual value of 50%. You can also use the button directly below the fader as a shortcut to Group Sub.Use Group Sub again if you want to modify the level.

Hope that helps, let us know if you have more questions!
