Losing displays with USB peripherals

Had a strange issue with our EOS. If our xkeys was plugged into or unplugged from the USB on the console the screens on the console would blank. They were filled with direct selects. Needless to say when this happened the first time we were quite alarmed. Once we figured out what happened it turned into more of an annoyance.

  • We've never seen this here in repairs, but since the video and USB are completely separate, this sounds like a motherboard issue.  You should call us up here in tech support and we can look into getting it fixed or at least figuring it out, because it sounds like this could develop into a larger issue.

  • Finally have had a bit of time to look at this a little closer. The issue appears to lie with USB extenders (USB to Cat5 baluns). When we plug the xkeys in without using the USB extension things work fine front or rear USB ports. As well if we plug the extension into the front USB ports on the EOS all seems fine. This problem only occurs when using a USB extension plugged into the rear USB ports. We have also tried a few different manufacturers of these extensions and all have produced the same problem. This is not something we plug into the EOS very often but it is used extensively with one of the RVI's. This problem does not occur with the RVI. Any thoughts are appreciated.
