How do we automatically update software?

One of the new features in 1.9 was "remote software install on all connected ETC processors." How do we use this feature? Obviously "Automatically Update Software" should be checked in the shell. What else do I have to do? Does the Update Service (TFTP) on the Network page of the shell have to be configured to point to a specific place?

Thank you.

  • Hi Jon,

You should just need to check the "Automatically Update Software" box in the shell settings on all the consoles and RVIs in the system.  The Primary console will hand out the new version of software -- so make sure you've installed it on the primary first.  From the 1.9 release note:

Within a multi-console system, you can now remotely install software to all devices.  In the ECU [Shell], go to Setting>General>Automatically Update Software to enable. Once enabled, the devices can be remotely updated with the next version of software. Devices will receive the software update from the Primary. When you install software on the Primary, the software will first be copied to its hard drive.

With the devices synchronized with the Primary, install the new version of software onto the Primary. All devices will lose their connection with the Primary at that time. When the Primary comes back online after installing the software, all the connected devices will be forced to update their software before they can reconnect with the Primary.

Let us know if you run into difficulty.  All consoles need to be running at least version 1.9 for this to work.  TFTP is used for Net2 Nodes and Net3 Gateways to transfer firmware, and doesn't affect software update.

  • Thanks Hans.

I know I had read about that somewhere, but couldn't find it in the release notes while I was looking over the weekend. I guess I'll try it out after the final release of 1.9.5.

    Thanks again!
