reusing color palettes

I have some color palettes I'd like to reuse from a previous show.  First, I have the fixtures and scrollers patched (as a compound channel) and operational.  I merge the color palette from the original show into the new one.  I navigate to the direct select tab and they are indeed there.  I then bring up the channel with the color scroller, but the color palette direct selects don't work.

Hopefully the description of my question is adequate...thanks in advance!

  • Pat,

Are the scroller channels numbered the same in the new show as the old show?

If not, open the color palettes in blind-

(by hitting [color palette] key twice and then the[edit] softkey; or by [blind] [color palette] #)

and then verify that the color palettes contain the information from the old show channels.  You can then use [copy to] to copy that information to the new show's channels.

The keystrokes are for EOS, not sure what the ION equivalents are.

  • Hey Todd,

When I bring up the palettes as you suggest, I see colums as such: "color palette", "Label", "Absolute", "Locked" and "By Type Channels".  The only columns that have information is the "color palette" (position in the gel string, ie, 1, 2, etc) and "Label" ("Groovy Grape", "Spanked Pink", etc).  Nothing else.  I thought, "OK, let me go back to the original show file" (thank God I am a pack rat) and I looked at the color palettes and it showed the same thing!

I am assuming something needs to go in the "By Type Channels", but I am not sure *what*.  I have the fixture/scroller setup as a compound channel.

    Thanks again,

  • As I am trying to get this figured out by this afternoon, I contacted tech support and asked the same question as above.  At least as I understand it, the tech told me that for the color palettes to merge correctly they needed to be patched the same or have the same channels in BOTH shows.  Is this right?!  If this is correct, then for every show I design, I need to have the scrollers patched into channels 50-65.  This sounds a bit restrictive and decreases the utility of "merge" substantially...at least for me!

Somebody PLEASE set me straight!  Anne?!

    Thanks Much!

  • Pat-

I did leave out one detail that probably makes all the difference- you need at least one channel in common between the old show's palettes and the new show.

Give this a try (I'm working from memory, not at the console now):

Assuming that one of the old show scroller channels was 50...

    • in your new show, go to patch and change type on channel 50 to match the scroller you have
    • [blind][color palette] #
    • see if channel 50 has any color information in the channel list display
    • if so, then: channel 50 [color][copy to] all of your other scroller channels
    • continue for the rest of your color palettes
    • if needed, go back to patch and change type on channel 50 back to what it was originally

I think this will work - I'll verify when I get to my console today.

  • Thanks again Todd.  Ok...just spitballing here, but what if I go into the old show and patch up a dummy fixture / scroller.  Then I go to my new show and do the exact same thing with the same numbers.  In theory, would the color palette work then with no extra adjustments?

This still seems a little hinky to me!

  • Pat,

At this point patching a dummy fixture in the old show would double the work, as you would have to add that channel in to all of the CP's in the old show, then copy that information from the dummy channel to the new show channels for each CP after merging.  If you have a template show that you always start from, it might be worth it to put a dummy scroller channel and color palettes in that show.

I just took some time on our EOS to work out the sequence for merging in CP's.  This is assuming that the old show channels don't match the new show channels for the fixture type and that you're merging into a new (blank) show.

    • create a new show
    • in patch: select the new show's scroller channels and at least one of the scroller channels from the old show.  Set their type to your brand of scroller.
    • merge in the color palettes from the old show
    • open color palette list- [color palette][color palette]
    • select beginning color palette thru ending color palette - [color palette] x [thru] y
    • enter edit mode- [edit] softkey
    • select old show's scroller channel [copy to] new channel x [thru] y
    • set old show's scroller channel to the correct type

Not being at the console earlier, I missed another crucial step- your new show must already have a channel that matches the old show's type and number before the merge.  Otherwise the color information doesn't get transferred to the new show because there's no compatible "container" for the information to merge in to.

    I hope this helps-

  • Wow Todd!  Thanks!  That worked like a charm!  I owe you a beer or four!  Now the next challenge.

How do I Import in the rest of my patch with out totally blowing all of the above out of the water?  Steve Bailey kindly suggested saving the patch as a new esf file, then , using Advanced merge, import only the patch range I need.  The problem is that I have two ranges of color scrollers to disregard. Knowwhatimean?  Maybe you have a cool work around for that!

That being said, this seems like an awful amount of work for Assigning an existing color palettes to a few channels?  Oh well!

Again, thanks for the help...hopefully you have a few patch import ideas!

  • Hi, right now you cannot import only a range of the patch. The workaround is to open the original (source) show and delete all of the channels that you do not want, then save it as a new show. In the destination file, import from this new show - deleted channels don't import and, more importantly, don't overwrite.

    Hope that helps-
