Recalling updated focus palettes in cues

 

I have a question regarding focus palettes.  This is what I want to do.

  • 1) Record a focus palette
  • 2) Use the palette to record cues
  • 3) When blocking is changed in rehearsal, simply update the focus palette, and have that change reflected in all of my cues that use the palette.

I have tried multiple ways of achieving this (update all, make absolute, etc.) but the cues which use the focus palette don't ever reflect the change.  I have to go into the cue, recall the focus palette, and then update the cue in order for the focus to be in the correct position.   I have a lot of cues that use the same focus palette and it gets tedious doing it that way.

I know that I am missing something very basic here.  Could someone please help a very tired lighting guy?

    I'm somewhat confused by your post, since the steps you describe are the default action of the desk. When you call up one of your cues that has a focus palette in it, do the Pan/Tilt fields say "FP (#)" or whatever name you assigned to that focus palette, or do they just show numbers? If it's just numbers, then the cue is not linked to any focus palette, which is why changes to the palette aren't changing the cue.

    Another way to check - in Live, go to a cue with a focus palette in it. Manually modify the Pan and Tilt values of a channel so that the numbers turn red, indicating a manual value. Now hit [Update], but don't hit [Enter] yet. In the screen that pops up, you should see "Cue (#)" under the Target field, but below that you should also see "Focus Palette (#)". Additionally, the Channels column of the "Focus Palette (#)" row should contain the channel that you modified, but the Channels column of the "Cue (#)" row should be empty.

    If your results didn't look like what I described, then your cues most likely don't contain links to their focus palettes. Try this sequence: [Channel] [(#)] [Focus Palette] [(#)] [Enter] - now the Focus field should show "FP (#)" or the name of your focus palette. Now use [Record] [Cue] [(#)] [Enter], and the focus palette will be stored into that cue. Now whenever you update that focus palette, that cue will also update.

    maybe you recorded your palettes as Absolute? when you type "Record FocusPallette 5" you can use a softkey to toggle absolute. absolute FPs don't write link into cues but rather their absolute values...
