Ion Backup Delay

Hi Everyone,

I'm doing a show with two ions, one as a primary and one as a tracking backup. As time goes on with the two being connected the response on the backup gets slower and slower til it seems to just stop updating with changes being made on the primary. The primary never has any issues with delays.

The two are networked thru a 10/100 switch and there are no other devices on the network.

Has anyone experience this?

Thanks
Eric

  • Hi Eric,

what protocols do you have activated in your consoles?

What else is connected in your network? Dimmer Racks? What kind, how many?
Gateways? What kind ? how many?

Also we have two different versions of Ion Console Hardware -

1.) Original - On the back of the console, there is only one VGA port, and then an extra DVI port,

where you connect a Y-DVI Adapter for two DVI monitors.

    2. Onboard DVI - On the back of the console, there is one vga port, and two dvi ports. A Y-Adapter dvi is not needed.

    Which do you have?

    thanks,

  • Hi Corey,

I have the local DMX ports activated as well as ACN and Net 2.

No other devices on the network other than the 2 consoles

Both of the consoles are the new dual DVI port ones.

The show has ended and unfortunately was never able to resolve this, but I would be interested to know if there are some things to check for in the future. I have the log files from the backup console as well as the show file from the master if that helps.

Also as a side note, I tried to have the two consoles track each other with MSC but wasn't able to get this to work either. Is this possible? I frequently did this with Express's and the manual seems to indicate that it's possible but didn't describe this exact scenario. I enabled MSC in and out on both consoles and they had identical show files but no luck in getting this to work. Anything that I might have missed with this setup?

    Thanks for your help,

    Eric

  • MSC can be used to fire cues in another console (eg another Ion), however you do need to do some setup.

First of all, check the rear I/O MIDI Groups in each Ion from the Shell > Settings > Rear I/O. There is a MIDI In Group and a MIDI Out Group.

The the ACN MIDI Rx ID must match the MIDI In Group number, and the ACN MIDI Tx ID must match the MIDI Out. (Otherwise it'll be looking for MIDI coming in from an external Show Control Gateway)

Enable MSC Transmit and disable MSC Recieve on the 'master' console, and vice-versa on the 'slave'. Connect the MIDI Out on the master to the MIDI In on the slave.

    - Don't enable both on both, and don't connect the MIDI both ways either. This will create a circular loop which leads to Bad Things.

Finally, which version of Ion were you using? - Select nothing and hit [About] to see info about the console.

  • Hi Richard,

Thanks for the response, are all of the group number and Id numbers that you talked about matching by default in the Ion setup? I did have transmit on the master enabled and receive on the slave. Running 1.9.6. Unfortunately show is over now so can't resolve this any further, but good to know that it's possible.

  • I believe that MIDI In and Out defaults to Group 1, while ACN MIDI Tx to 2 and MIDI Rx to 1.

So you'd need to change the ACN MIDI Tx ID on the master console for it to work.

(We know that's a bit daft and it is already on the list. That said, once we've corrected the defaults it won't affect existing consoles as we don't change your settings when you upgrade a console.)
