Effects in Cues

Hello all, I have a little effects question.

I have been programming a sequence of effects across 4 units.

1 Absolute effect changing a units position across the back of a cloth and then resetting to it's original position and a Step Effect turning the light on as it passes over the back of the cloth and turning it off as it resets.

My problem is that I'm trying to trigger this across the four units but delaying the start of each subsequent effect so they start offset by about 3 seconds. I've tried triggering them in four separate cue parts with a delay on each but I can't seem to get the effects to trigger in the Parts. Every time I set the channel to it's effect in a part it moves the instruction to Part 1..

Is this the correct behaviour and can you not trigger effects from parts? If not does anyone have a more elegant solution? I've resorted to the old Follow On method but I figured there must be a better way..

Thoughts appreciated.

  • Ok so I've done a little more reading and I've realised I can dispense with the Step Effect if I record the intensity and Focus into a Preset and use that in the Absolute effect.

So far so good. I may have answered my own question now.. I think I understand a few of the Effects Editor settings a bit better, so I may be able to create what I need to with this one effect.

The question still remains wether you can assign effects to channels in multiple parts and if anyone does have a better/neater way of creating this effect I would love to hear it! I'm still getting to grips with the whole engine. We don't get to use it much in the Opera world ^_^

  • Hi Sabr,

Sounds like you're finding your way round it. Intensity and Focus in a Preset is probably the way forward. Have a play with the Trail on the Absolute effect as well, combined with a grouping of 'Spread' this should make them all follow each other nicely. The trail will determine how far through fixture 1 gets before fixture 2 starts it's cycle etc etc.

I'm fairly sure that at this time you can't trigger an effect from a part cue. I believe it is on the list to add at some point in the future, Anne will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong!

The other alternative is to do it with another cuelist and trigger that from your main stack.

  • You cannot currently trigger an effect from a part cue - it will always trigger from part 1, using the delay/timing of intensity up.  There is, however, a delay field in the effect status display, which can be used to override this behavior when needed.

  • Hi Graham

Thank you for the tips, it's looking better and better. I have gone down the Absolute Effect route like you suggested seems to be working out pretty well. It has certainly made what started out as a very complicated sequence into one manageable effect! Fantastic.

Thanks for that hint regarding the Effects Status window, I hadn't realised it was viewable in the Blind display. I have been using it to monitor live effects and completely missed it's Blind application. That will make it a lot easier!

    Thanks Again.
