Smart Color ION patch

Hello,

We just acquired  six Apollo Smart Color Pro (7.25), and these are the first "intelligent" fixtures we've used. In the ION fixture library, I only see options for 10, 7, and 5.25. Patching it as a 7 appears to work until we've finished calibrating the scroller,  at which point using  {next} and {last} skip several gels (the gels that are skipped are never next to each other) in the scoller.  The scroller is loaded with the default 18 gel String, but I can't seem to find a way to check that the frames are correct outside of setting up the scroller string in the patch. Is the skipping an issue with the version of the scoller  in the fixture library, or is there an option to set the amount of frames for the fixture?

Also, in our current patch, the six color scrollers are patched along with six separate dimmers into a single channel. Is it possible to simply run all of the scrollers together in this single channel? Or should the each scroller and it's corresponding fixture be patched in separate channels?

Thanks,

Todd

  • Hi Todd,

    Welcome to the forums.

I think the Smart Color 7 will work fine

When you patch the Smart Color the console will give you a default of 16 frames. If your scroll is any different to this you will want to create your own custom scroll string in patch. This is the way to tell the console how many frames you have, and therefore how it needs to split up the DMX range. It is advisable to create your own custom string in any case, as you can then add the specific gels to the list, allowing you options for selecting frames by gel number or from the colour picker.

Once you have created a custom string it will be saved as part of your showfile and can be applied to any additional scrollers. You can also import the list into other showfiles to save you re-building it time and again.

It is possible to run all six scrollers on the one channel, either by giving them the same address, or by patching them as individual parts of the channel. However, if you have separate dimmers available for each fixture I would recommend patching them as six individual channels - one part for the dimmer and one part for the scroller. This will give you much more control in the long term.

    Hope that helps

  • Well, it seems that actually that did not resolved the problem. Although the first few frames are centered correctly, after about the 6th frame they no longer center correctly. Now, the defined scroll has the 18 frames that are mounted in the scroller, but the LCD encoder only reads values from F1- to F16+, so it seems as though I either did not define the new scroll correctly or the board doesn't load the 18 gels correctly.

    Thanks,

    Todd

  • The default Smart 7 profile has the color scroll built into 16 frames - to add more, you'll want to copy the profile, and edit the 'ranges' value for the scroller attribute in this new, editable profile. You'll should then insert two more steps, and divide the DMX values for all steps appropriately: about 13 units for each colour. Since this will find roughly the center of each colour, the first frame's DMX range will be 0-7-ish, the next range should be 8 to 14 or thereabouts, the next 15 to 27, and so on to 255.

(While you're in there editing, you may as well define the actual colours used instead of colour 1, colour 2, etcetera - if you're using the same colours in all scrolls, anyway)

You may find you still need to adjust the colour frames with this new profile, but this should tell the console there are now 18 frames, not 16.

  • Give this profile a try... I don't yet know how to send individual profiles (Or if it can be done?) so you'll probably want to merge this showfile with a -safe to edit- version of one of your own showfiles.

Edit: just noticed the labels in the ML controls for the color frames are incorrect from 16-18 - but they should still work correctly. I'm not sure why the buttons didn't take the correct labels.
