ION - EXPRESSION. Fader Wing and writing Cues.

I've been a EXPRESSION board programmer for years. (Scenemaster 60 before that)

This coming week, I am a guest LD for a dance concert here in Hawaii.  The Theatre has an ION board with the optional Fader Wing.

Question:

My ION Board Op tells me fader wings can NOT be used to write cues in the same manner the Expression. She says  you MUST use the command line interface, calling up channels using keystrokes (or the mouse) and using, (for example), the wheel to set levels.

Is this true?  If so, Seriously?  I can not be the only designer who loves the freedom, speed and creativity to write dance cues using faders.

  • By faders on the expression are you referring to using submasters? You can record submasters on ion and load them onto faders. This will let you have handle control of systems for programming. This really limits you however on ion. It would be more advisable for you to record groups or use presets while programming.

  • Clem,

If you are wanting to use submasters to set levels for groups of channels and then record the result into cues, this can be done.  However, here are some things to look out for:

    • On the EOS/ION, submaster # does not necessarily equal the physical fader #.
    • If you desire to bring up faders and record the result and then modify the faders to record a new cue based on where the faders are (i.e. not starting from scratch for each cue), you will want to turn off (disable) Auto Playback on the Desk Settings>Record Defaults screen.  This will leave the channels under manual control after you record a cue, allowing you to bring a fader down to record a lower level for the next cue.
    • Editing cues that are already recorded will work best with the key pad, but you can use the fader "assert" button (above the "bump" button) to select the channels in a submaster when the fader is all the way down.  This may help speed up selecting channels to edit.

It's not impossible to do, just a bit different than you or the ION board op may be used to.

    Hope this helps-

  • I believe you can also switch the fader wing into channel mode so fader 1 is chan 1 2 is chan 2 etc to give you a more "express" like interface

But regardless, I can't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to bring up a look on faders and record it to a cue

  • You can set the fader wings to channel mode, in the same way that you change the pages.  It is the last selection.  When set to fader mode, be advised that the faders operate on an LTP basis.  So, if you bring the channel faders up, store the cue and then take the faders down, this LTP nature will drive the channels toward zero.  To store the cue and clear the faders, leaving the resultant cue data up, you can hold down the [Sneak] button while you clear the channel faders!
