Two effects questions

I guess this is the week for effects questions!

1.  I have five Robe color wash 575's (channels 81-85) that I would like to have a "ballyhoo"effect applied to (I think it is effect 909).  I also only want them to ballyhoo around a very specific part of the stage as they hopefully will be creating a quick distraction while something happens USR!

2.  I have 8 RevEAL LED fixtures (channels 72-79) that that I would just like to random chase at full intensity and have random colors.

3. Finally, I am assuming that I can simply "call" these effects with a cue?

These are probably really easily applied effects but I have experimented for about a week with no luck.  I am hoping that the experts here can help me out!

Thanks much,

  • Hi Pat,

To achieve what your going for I would:

1.)   Firstly be in the cue that you would like the effect to happen on.

Select your Robe Color Wash lights and point them in the centre of this "specific part of the stage" then apply the ballyhoo effect which is indeed effect 909

    • [Select Channels] [Effect] [x] [Enter] - In your case, 81 [Thru] 85 [Effect] 909 [Enter]

You will immediately see your lights start the effect. You might find that there ballyhooing a little too large or small for your desired look so you can double tap Effect, select effect 909 and change the scale of the effect to make the whole movement to the size you want.

The best thing about the effect engine is that changes you make in the Effects Page take affect and happen live as you're making these changes.

2a.)   The second effect you want to happen can be made a couple of ways:

If you would like specific colors for the 8RevEAL LED Fixtures then I would do this:-

Firstly I would select the LED's and make various Presets with the fixtures at full and with all the colors you want within the effect. To have the LEDs flashing through your colours but not all have the same colours as they flash through, In each of your presets vary the colours across your selected light.

Then I would go into the effect page (Double tap effect) and create a Absolute effect.

To quote from the manual - "Absolute effects are a listing of sequential actions that channels are to take", "Absolute effects also do not contain an embedded channel list. Therefore, the effect must be applied to channels in order to be played back."

I would create a number of steps and then in each of these steps select in the action column which preset you would like the effect to take.

    E.g

    Step 1 Action = Preset 1 (Blue)

    Step 2 Action = Preset 2 (Red)

    Step 3 Action = Preset 3 (Green)

From here you can run the effect in the cue you're working on e.g 72 [Thru] 79 [Effect] 1 [Enter] and then go back to the effects page to change the times, randomness, dwell time etc etc as you desire.

2b.)   Another way you could do it is by making a Color Effect with your chosen channels (72-79) and having hue and saturation as the parameters. This will generate a wide spectrum of colors and they wil nicely be fading in and out of each other. You can change the cycle time to increase or decrease the speed of the effect.

When you have the desired look Update Cue Only and there you should have the effect that will trigger on the cue.

You will notice that in the effects column it will have 2 labels in it, E909 + E(the number you made your LED effect on), notice that these aren't in any of the other cues, this means that the effect isn't applied to any other of those cues, This means you don't need to worry about a "Effect Stop" Command or anything of that sort.

You may though want to change how your effects exit from the cue. You will find the option to change this within the Effects Page, aswell as the entry into the cue.

Have a look at Pages 227 onwards in the manual.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks Sam!  I got the Movers effect to work perfectly, but I am not quite reading you on the LED effect.

I've made eight presets, one for each fixture, ie, preset one is LED #1 with a blue color, preset two is LED #2 with a orange color, preset three is LED #3 with a green color, etc

I am just not quite sure how to insert the presets into each step of the effect.  I've made a custom effect with eight steps and get an error when I try to insert a preset.

I also cannot get it to "random".  I have effects attributes set to "random rate" and in teh "Attributes" effects tombstone it says "random rate 50>150" but the effect still runs sequentially.

    Thanks in advance,

  • Hi Pat,

Please see my my previous amended post. - I didn't want the thread to have any information that was wrong so felt amending the post would be better rather than just posting again and having to refer back. (Just for any other readers on the forums)

A mistake on my part, instead of making a step based you need to make an absolute effect.

To achieve a randomness of colours use Random Group and not Random Rate

To quote from the manual again:

    "Attributes

These determine the basic behavior of the effect. Attributes include behaviors such as forward,

reverse, bounce, positive, negative, and random grouping or random rate. The attributes are

slightly different between step, absolute and relative effects.

    • Forward - the effect will run in the programmed direction (the arrow on the pattern

editor indicates “forward” for pattern effects, step and absolute effects will follow

    numerical order).

    • Reverse - effect will run in the opposite direction of forward or reverse numerical

direction. Forward and Reverse are mutually exclusive settings.

    • Bounce - effect will run first in forward, then in reverse. Subsequent passes alternate

    between forward and reverse.

    • Positive - effect will run the steps (on state and off state) as programmed. This is

    applicable to step effects only.

    • Negative - inverts the on state and off state for the effect. This is applicable to step

    effects only.

    • Random Grouping - channel distribution or step order (depending on the type of

effect) are applied in a continuously random fashion.

    • Random Rate - this overrides the cycle time of the effect. Random Rate is applied in

    a range (for example 5- thru 150).

Play with these behaviors to see how they alter your effect."

  • Thanks Sam!  That worked wonderfully!

    Pat
