Level Wheel Disable?

Hello Eos/Ion Forum

I'm becoming very familiar with the Ion desk. It's very powerful and enjoyable to program. But there's one option I can't seem to find or isn't available

What would be nice as to have the option in system settings to disable / enable the level wheel all together.

I'm aware that this option is available in Blind mode which is cool.

I find that the level wheel is very sensitive when trying to sneak up intensities. So instead I resort to selecting a channel(s) and use the Custom Encoder Page and bring up intensities with Encoder Wheel #1 which makes trimming cyc mixes very smooth and effective. But  isn't that what the level wheel is for?

Just tapping the the console with selected channels activates the Level Wheel which is my biggest concern.

If someone knows of a formula to make the Level Wheel very fine in system settings it would be most appreciated as I've tried a number of combinations but to no avail. Please send me your input.

Thanks

Johnny

  • Can't really answer your question, Johnny, but I want to ask:

You can disable the level wheel in Blind??? Where and how?  One of my operators was commenting that the function of being able to wheel up in blind had disappeared with the upgrade to 1.9.6 (she thinks), and would like it back.

To try to answer Johnny's second question about Level wheel adjustability:

    Try:

Displays, set-up, Desk, Facepanel.  There, beside the Encoder setting sliders, are the sliders for the Level Wheel (LW).  The tick factor and accelleration factor adjust how the wheel responds to being moved.  More Ticks, Less Sensitive (I think),  The higher the accelleration factor, the farther it moves once it gains speed. (same for then encoders: small movements allow for fine adjustment, but when you start spinning fast, to cover lots of ground, the console recognizes this intent and will swap from fine mode to coarse mode and zoom across the stage).

Try for the level wheel Ticks set at 150, and Accel Factor at 613.

    YMMV.

  • Clarification point.  :-).  The encoders for NPs are disabled in blind until an encoder paging key is pressed.   The level wheel is always active.

Press one of the encoder paging keys and the level wheel should work as normal.

    Anne,

On my Ion in  v1.9.6 I'm pretty certain that while in blind the level wheel did not work until I hit an encoder page key, even if I was just selecting conventional channels. In the 1.9.8 Beta it is working exactly as you state it should.

  • Anne, can an option to disable the level wheel in blind please be added? :-)

    -M

  • Andrew,

Thank you. I will try that LW combo you've suggested in system settings. I've tried number of different combinations prior and didn't really see any change in behavior with the LW. The encoders on the other hand are in great trim.

I admit I'm used to the Expression LW. As I recall it had weight and drag when rolling it up and down. By giving it just a little push would bump levels to 20% or so. With the Ion BAM 80-100%

As for Blind Mode in 1.9.6, encoders and level wheel are disabled by default. Pressing an [Encoder Page Key], for example [Color] will enable the encoders and level wheel. Also when encoders are disabled trackball functionality for pan and tilt will be disabled as well.

Goto blind select channels, press custom and push up the level wheel.

    Hope this helps

  • Hey Anne. Where can I go to put in requests for future updates?

What I'm getting at is to have an option to disable the level wheel all together.  :-)

Not sure where to go with this.

As always thanks for your help.

  • This is the place to put in feature requests.  IF we added a disable function in setup, would you expect a way to temporarily turn in on and then back off without going to setup?  Or would you be satisfied writing a macro for this purpose?

  • How about a setup option to "lock" the level wheel haptically (is that even a word?) so there is resistance to moving it.

If it is "locked", then perhaps @ + wheel would "unlock" it and allow it to spin and affect levels.  (shift + wheel is already taken)

I'm not sure if Ion and Element have haptic encoders for level wheels though.

  • Personally, I never never want the level wheel enabled in blind, so I'd be fine with a macro. :-)

  • Great!

I'd would be most satisfied with writing a macro. Going through setup doesn't necessarily take me out of my way. If I found myself having to go back to setup to enable or disable the level wheel a bunch of times then I would most likely write a macro. For the most part I'd leave it disabled.

    Thank you for your time
