Converting Show Files from ION to Express

Is is possible to convert an ION show file for the Expression 3?

  • Yes. I'm not at a console so this is from memory.

You will need to download and install to a Windows computer, the free ETC Expression Off-Line Editor software. You will also need a 3.5" floppy drive and disk(s) to get the file into an Express/ion series console.  This is in the Support - Downloads - Entertainment Controls - Expression 3 section, scroll down to Off-Line Editor

In Ion, go to Display - File - Export - Export USITT ACSII, saving the file.  Remember the particular Ion file save location.

In Expression Off-Line Editor, choose Convert and browse to that ASCII file to import into Express/ion format.  You should see the cues and channel levels.

Note that because Ion/Eos handle moving light and other devices as attributes to channels, not as attributes having individual channels (as with Express/ion) this convert really only works well with basic channels/levels/timing information.

Once you have the data in Expression Off-Line Editor, you can save to floppy.
