ION to PC Client

Hi

Trying to set up a PC laptop client and can't seem to get the ion to act as master.  I've checked other post here on the IP address setting and set up the laptop and ION accordingly.  The laptop is still not seeing the 'master'.  When I'm  in the ION's shell, in Network settings the ION is saying Offline  at the top in yellow.  Is this correct? Also having used all the recommended ip addresses and settings is there anything I could possibly be doing wrong?

Cheers

  • There could be any number of reasons why you can't connect. The first thing I would check is that the network link and activity LED's are on/flickering at the Ethernet connection on the Ion.

Are you running via a network switch?

Have you re-booted the Ion since you plugged the network cable in?

If the Ion thinks it is offline it's most likely not seeing a network connection for some reason.

Once you're sure you have a good network connection you should check that the software version on the console the same number as the version you are using on your PC.

Are you familiar with how to Ping from a Command Prompt on the PC? You could try pinging the Ion's IP Address to check that you have a connection.

Let us know what your IP addresses and related details are set to on both the Ion and the PC.

  • ION IP 10.101.1.101

    LAPTOP 10.101.1.102

    Subnet 255.255.0.0

    gateway 10.101.0.1

There is no activity on the back of the ION. When we get a break we're going to try a new network cable.  We are not going thru anything, router or switch.  It's just direct from console to laptop.

I did this on my mac couple of days ago no probs?   Laptop's running latest EOS client download from the ETC website.  ION is V2.0.9

Do we need to use a cross over cable?

    Cheers

  • Most Macs have auto-switching for their ethernet ports, so you don't need a crossover. Your PC probably doesn't though, so you will most likely need a crossover cable.

  • You should set the Gateway IP to the same as the IP address of the device.

Your Ion can't be running v2.09 as the latest released version is 1.9.6.

As Daniel says, your PC may not be autoswitching. The newer versions of Ion are autoswitching, but yours may not fit into that category. If in doubt it's always good to use a small network switch if you can lay your hands on one.

Are you running Windows XP or Windows 7?

    XP :)

I've just plugged in the crossover cable I have life on the back of the ION!

Now just to confirm I need the IP address to be the same as the gateway i.e ip for the ion 10.101.1.101 g/way 10.101.1.101 & IP for Laptop 10.101.1.102 G/way 10.101.1.102?
