ION repatching scrollers

I hope I can explain this clearly.  New ION user.  My events are at different locations with varying equipment; both theatrical and concert events.  I often times use color scrollers but not always.  Since equipment varies show by show which ETC Source Four pars get scrollers also varies.  So one show might  have scrollers on all 6 pars on each bar and another might have only 4 scrollers out of 6 pars; leaving two pars white.

As far as I have been able to find out through forum questions is whenever a channel is unpatched all that does is remove it from the show but it still shows whatever it was patched "as"  For example: channel 1 patched as two parts, one par and the other ChromaQ scroller.  When it is unpatched it remains as two parts and the ChromaQ remains on the patch screen, there is just no @ value assigned.  I have not had anyone tell me a channel can be completely "cleared" of all attributes other than actually deleting the channel then re-patching it back in.

Sooo now when I need to patch a show, I don't want to have to re-patch ALL of my channels, movers included, so I don't want to clear the patch.  I tried to move a channel with a scroller to anther channel but that just creates 3 parts on that channel.  I tried to copy a channel with a scroller but I have to re-assign that channel its @ value plus I have to re-assign part 2 with the scroller @ value.  This is quite time consuming.  I couldn't seem to get "replace" to work in any of these cases either.

It also leaves the information from the "copied from" channel still showing and once a lot of those are copied the patch screen is quite confusing.

I'll give a specific example to hopefully help understand a little clearer:

Last show patched with channels 1 thu 16 as 1 thru 16 with a scroller attached to each of those 16 channels.  Scroller values 2/100 through 2/115.  Channels 17 thru 50 patched 1:1 straight dimmer.  Other channels in the show patched as movers.

New show.  Want to patch channels 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24 with same values however they will now contain the scrollers, same above dmx values for each scroller; 100 - 115.

Next show channels 1 thru 50 as 1:1 dimmers with no scrollers at all.

Next show want to patch all odd channels 1 thru 32 1:1 with a scroller on each one and all even channels 2 thru 50 to be straight 1:1 dimmers.

All movers always remain the same channels so they never change.  It's just the location of the scrollers that changes.

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here.  Is there an easy way to accomplish this each time?

  • If I'm reading this correctly, you're looking for Parts. My guess is that all of your conventional channels are patched with the dimmer as Part 1 and the scroller as Part 2. To remove the scroller from a channel while keeping the dimmer data, just delete the scroller part - [Delete] [2] [Part] [2] [Enter] I believe. You can also delete a range of scrollers with [Delete] [1] [Thru] [16] [Part] [2] [Enter]. This will leave all of your Part 1 (probably dimmer) data intact, but remove any reference to Part 2 (scrollers). However, be aware that if you have more than one dimmer patched to a channel, the scroller might be Part 3, and this system wouldn't work.

Is that what you're looking for?

  • scrollers are a part 2 however it's more than just deleting the scroller.  With that I still have to repatch all of them to the new locations.  I was hoping to be able to move them around and I think possibly another answer came for that.  I know there are a few ways, just wanting to make sure i'm not missing something because it will happen the majority of my events and needs to be fairly simple if possible.

I'm going to try moving just part 2 (the scroller) to another channel and see if it attaches and leave the original channel still assigned properly as a dimmer as well as keeps the scroller address correct
