Loading Ion Showfiles into Express

Hi

we have a showfile, written on Ion, now there will be a show in another theatre. They are using an Express(or was it an expression?), now the question is, if there is any way to make Express understand my showfile?
Any type of data I can converte it into?

Thanks

Lukas

  • hi again

i tried to get an answer on my own, too

    and so i remembered ASCII?

how does that work? Information about this are rare, i think, at least i didn't find many helpful information yet.

Do i only have to export an ASCII-data from Ion and load it into Express?

and what about CSV? What is this and may it be a better or just another or a not working way?

    Thanks a lot!

  • Hello -

I believe you will need to use Expression Off-Line software to do this, and you will need a floppy disk to transfer the show file to the console. Export the Ion show to ASCII format, then use Expression Off-Line software to read in that ASCII data (see page 3 of the Expression Off-Line Quick Guide v3.1). Then you can save the show using Off-Line to your floppy disk, which you can then use to load the show into the Express console.

Please note that the ASCII format only transfers basic show data like conventional patch, cues and submasters. No effects or moving light data will make it over into your Express console. Also, your Express has a more limited number of dimmers and channels than the Ion. Make sure the Ion show will fit into the channel space of your Express.

    Thanks much -

  • To speed you up a little, Sarah is warning you that Expression Off-Line might choke on some of the Keywords exported from ION. You will almost certainly need to run the file through a word-processor. Once you find a keyword that prevents your file from being read, you can either delete the entire line, or search-and- replace-all the Keyword, with the first character changed to "!", which is the ASCII Comment character. (if Expression Off-Line is just ignoring it, you don't have to delete it ....) You may be able to edit the Expression show after the channel levels are in, to allow for Scroller-Intensity pairs, or even moving lights. But it can be a lot of work. Be sure to proof-read quite a few cues before you send the new file to the next theater. You can read a little more about ASCII here LINK, where there are more links if you need them.
