ION sequence (chase) in a cue

This might be a bit complicated to explain to me.  Hope not.

I want to use some Robe color wash movers in a cue.  One wash will light up in a color on a focus position for a couple of seconds, then another at a different position, then another, then another, then another, etc. etc. etc.

It needs to run as long as the scene takes to finish which can vary depending on how long it takes for the performers to say their lines each night.

Once that scene is done I need to go to the next cue and the sequence or chase needs to stop.

A little help please :-)

  • If I'm clear on what you are trying to do .... You can build a standard step-based intensity effect for this.  Position your color washes where you want them, and put them in the color you need them in.  You'll probably want to preset this in the cue just prior to the one where you want the effect to start.   Double hit effect to enter the effect editor.  select your effect number and identify the effect as "step-based."    Step 1 should be your first channel.  You have three timing elements - fade in/dwell/decay.  First time is how long it should take the channels in step 1 to fade from their current intensity value (off, i'm assuming).  Second is how long you want them to stay at their "on" value, and "decay" is how long it should take them to fade to their off state.   Step time is how much time between when step 1 fires until step 2 should go.   Repeat as necessary for all channels involved in the effect.

Go to live and apply the effect.  [Recall From] [Effect n] [Enter]

    Record your cue.

[Effect] [n] [at] [Enter] - to stop the effect.

    Record your next cue.

The effect will fade in and out based on your cue intensity time.  You can modify this by using the entry and exit time in the effect itself.  Once the basic sequencing is correct .... you can modify the overall timing of the sequences by using the cycle time in the effect itself, or the rate in the effect status display (Displays/Effect Status).

There are some excellent video tutorials on the training pages for Ion effects that you might want to check out when you have the time!!

    Hope that helps.

  • Another option is to create a "Loop" of cues with a Loop value of 0 so that after it completes the first time around then you can exit out by hitting GO at any point.

    Q101  Time 2  F4

    Q102  Time 2  F4

    Q103 Time 2  F4

    ...

    Q110 Time 2 F4 Link 101 Loop 0

As long as the first run of the cues is always longer than the scene this works the same as Anne's solution, but gives you additional timing and level changes per cue...

  • It needs to run as long as the scene, which can vary from performance to performance then when the scene is completed the next cueneeds to be activated.  Wouldn't the loop with 0 just run once and end?  Now if I do a loop with 1 or 2 or longer, put an assert on the next actual scene change cue then anytime the loop is running hit GO will that then stop it and take me into the next scene?

  • Not sure what you mean by F4.  I'm on the ION console and that would be format.  Anyway I tried using link and loop ad you described however it still requires me to keep hitting GO as it cycles though the number of times I set it for then exits when done.  That's not a chase and I can't exit out of it quickly when the scene concludes.

    I'm probably missing something.

Regarding Anne's suggestion I'm going to try that tomorrow.  Tonight is our opening and I don't have time to fiddle with it right now.  In the mean time I have linked the last to the first of the series 47.12 linked to 47.1 and along in the play just before I start into that I hit GoToCue 48 (which is the exit cue of that effect I want) and I just let it sit.  When the scene is done - no more Go, Go, Go I just hit Enter and it exits the link and goes to the next look.

    Tomorrow i'll try Annes suggestion.

  • When Seth says F4, he is referring to setting a follow time of 4.

So, using his example, setup your cues with the intensities coming on/off as you chose.  Link your last cue back to your first cue.   Set a loop of zero on that same cue.  For example, cue 5 link 1 loop 0.  The loop of zero means "infinite."  Select your cue range and set your follow time Cue 1 thru 5 Follow 4 (or whatever).   This is your auto-folllow - which will cause subsequent cues to automatically trigger.  Set your recovery cue.  This is the look you want to have on stage when the sequence is over. When the desk has run the looped sequence once, your recovery cue is in pending.  You can break out of the loop sequence any time you want by hitting go.

It is important to know that looped sequences are all run as "in sequence" cues.  Therefore, on your loop back to your first cue in the sequence, any channels that have values in your last cue in the sequence, but have tracked data in the first will continue to receive their instructions from the previous cues. To reset the stage to exactly the same look as you had in your first cue, you may need to assert that cue.  Depends on what you have stored as move instructions in your first cue in the sequence.

You can achieve what you are looking for either through a step-based effect or a cue sequence.  Programmer preference.    And it depends on what else you need to have happening while this chase is going on.

    hope that helps.
