Eos Family Software 1.9.9 is now open for beta.

This software is primarily to support Gio and CEM3 dimmer feedback/config.  There are a handful of defects addressed.  We expect to release in December as the number of changes for basic functionality across the family is pretty small.  As always, though, we'd like to vet the software with the largest possible cross-section.    If you beta tested 1.9.8, you already have access to the 1.9.9 beta code.  If you have not, though, and are interested in beta testing, please drop me an email at anne.valentino@etcconnect.com.

Several people on these forums in the past have mentioned "scary" beta testing.    Please be assured that we do detailed alpha testing prior to making beta available.  And before we get to "open beta". we've got pretty extensive experience with our core beta sites.  By the time we get to open beta, we are pretty close to a release candidate... so the code has some milage on it.

  • so, as an Ion owner, what's better for me?

    Install 1.9.8 now, and then install 1.9.9 when it arrives in a month?

    Install 1.9.8 now, and don't worry about the 1.9.9, since the changes don't affect my consoles?

    Wait for 1.9.9, and not worry about 1.9.8.?

    There's a lot of paperwork changes associated with 1.9.8 for, so I hesitate to do it all again in a month for 1.9.9 if one upgrade really isn't that important.

    That's a good question Andrew.  We try to get as many people into the open beta cycle as we can.  It's always good to have more eyes on the software - even if the purpose of the release is to support features that don't necessarily apply to a specific venue.   Much depends on the cost of upgrading for you and the tolerance of your management in terms of software updates.  We have a number of venues that are not permitted to run beta code.

     If you are in a venue where SW upgrades have to be slotted into the schedule and you have to have a crew call - I'd suggest you install 1.9.8 now and then plan to install 1.9.9 after release.  We generally iterate SW builds pretty quickly during beta cycles - and we ask our beta participants to keep up with the most recent build.    Once we are in the open beta period, that slows down somewhat as we come closer to a release candidate.   But we generally ask our beta group to stay in really close touch with us - and use a private forum to support that.

    Sorry, I wasn't really asking about beta testing 1.9.9.  It was more a question of, when it comes out in a month, do I as an Ion user NEED to install it, or can I stay with 1.9.8 until 2.0 comes out?

    Or, should I hold off on installing 1.9.8 and jump direct to 1.9.9?

    Given my 2 consoles, 5 manuals, numerous sets of update paperwork, instructions, settings to record, etc, for me, duplicating all that work a month after 1.9.8 gets installed is a little tiresome and a waste of paper.

    with 1.9.8, there is shortcut sheet, the facepanel sheet, the Manual supplement, the release notes.  Other than the 1.9.9 Release notes, will any of the ETC papers change with 1.9.9?

    I hope that clarifies things.  I just want to avoid the 1.9.5 (DON"T INSTALL, HERE'S 1.9.6) installation from a few years ago. (I'm sure you do to!)
