Media for little guys

Some of the Dance Companys that I work with are using Power-point to run jpegs and video for there shows does anyone out the know of a way to control Power-point from an ION (ie forward ,back, goto cue ). I have looked into Media Servers and for the most part it would not be cost effective for my theatre and clients maybe half a dozen are doing it.Does anyone know of a way to do this on a more simpler level (Power-point ,Open Office , Media Shout ) .Rosco used to make a unit that would only move a slide forward and had a chance of sticking .Just think it would be an awesome thing to be able to do this on a basic level for those of us that are not doing tours or arena shows

  • Look at Qlab. Figure53.com. They have different levels to license. You can buy or rent by the day, week whatever. That and a$50 USB to midi cable from Alesis and send show control signal giving go, stop back.

Qlab kicks ass! Does a lot more than still images.

  • If you're very short on budget (as I certianly have had many zero touring budgets) I've had great results using a freeware program called Phlumx. Basically, it's a much-simplified and less flexible Hippotizer, with media clip banks, layers, and editing options, and has MIDI in and out capability plus hotkeys, meaning you're able to define plenty of behaviour through the ION. Even Phlumx's fade-to-blackout is a massive improvement upon Powerpoint at no cost.

  • If you are on a mac, you can try KATRIN.  It's a media server with a lot of options. Pretty simple.  The manuals are horrible as they are translated from russian.  It talks to your console thru Artnet.  A good art net understanding is crucial though to get the networking to work correctly.

  • Have you investigated a product called KEYSTROKE from Rosco Labs:

I've never had the opportunity to use it but I thought it to be a clever idea.

  • Thanks for the tip i will try out the PC progams first .I do have someone with a MAC and will look at that to .Rosco has stoped making KEYSTROKE and i have been told that it would only move a slide forward looking for a little bit of control GOTO CUE  would be awesome .Lowel with ETC during CUE thought it might be possable  using ACN and a fixture profile  If you want a Ferrari go buy one but what to do if you only have mony for a Chevy. Not worried about having lots of fancy features just the basics would be cool. thanks again for the replys

  • I actually wrote my own mini media server with 4 layers, (2 with video and 2 with images).  This was all done on the Mac in Quartz Composer from the Xcode Developer tools from Apple.(which are free) and a great plug in from SyntheFX called PixelNode which adds ArtNet receive capabilities to Quartz Composer.  Using on a show right now that opens this weaken and have had great success.  There is a great resource out there called at http://kineme.net/ that has lots of blogs and tools to create your own.
