ION will not boot with fader wing attached

If I have my 2x20 fader wing attached (via USB cable) the ION will not boot.  It stays on the ETC logo screen.  There are a series of beeps while booting.  2 beeps quickly together and 2 more that are slower spacing.  If I unplug the USB cable to the fader wing the ION will eventually finish booting normally.  Any ideas?
