Eos 1.9.8 Syntax Error

We've been having a problem on one of our Eoses for several weeks now.  We have two consoles, both with the 1.9.8 update, and only one has this problem.

While typing a command, for example [1] [5] [3] [at] [5] [Enter], we get a syntax error in the middle. It isn't always consistent. Sometimes we'll type the [1] in, and upon entering the [5] we immediately get a syntax error. Hitting the [5] repeatedly eventually gets the board to recognize the [5] as an acceptable input. Then the same thing needs to be repeated with the [3], repeatedly hitting the [3] until the board recognizes it as being okay. Sometimes the board is completely fine with [1] [5] [3] [at] [Enter]. The randomness of the error is especially frustrating. We've found that typing slowly seems to decrease the overall number of errors.

This error happens in Live and Blind, including any pages of Blind like Patch, Group, or Effect.

It also gets progressively worse. Restarting the system completely helps a lot. Once we get one error, though, we are more and more likely to be bogged down with more syntax errors. It makes programming infuriatingly slow at times.

Has anyone else had this problem? I can't seem to find other messages about this. Any ideas on fixes?

  • Hi there,

[Edit - what Anne said. Do feel free to answer these questions as well, but logs will tell much of the story] :)

    A few thoughts and questions:

Are the consoles networked together when this happens? If so, is this assigned as Primary, Backup, or Client? Are all the consoles on the same user?

Does the facepanel test app show any sluggishness?  This can be found in the shell (Exit -> Settings -> Maintenance). If there is sluggishness here, it is likely an issue with the actual facepanel.

Is there an external touchscreen or external keyboard hooked up to the Eos?

If you haven't done so yet, it may be worthwhile to upgrade the facepanel firmware for the Eos console (instructions can be found in the release notes for 1.9.8). The firmware itself adds Littlelite dimming support, but reloading it could potentially help.

  • This is Erin Teachman, the first electrician at the theatre where this issue is happening. Thanks for the quick responses.

Anne: I have emailed the logs to eos@etcconnect.com with a best guess as to the last occurrence of the problem (March 2nd, 2012, between 5:45 and 7:00PM).

Hans: We have two consoles but they are on physical separate networks in separate spaces. Both of the consoles are setup as Primary.

I will run the facepanel test app as soon as I can to tell you if there is sluggishness.

There is an external keyboard hooked up to the Eos, but this is also true of the other console as well.

We have upgraded the firmware as part of the comprehensive upgrade to 1.9.8 (new software, new keys, new facepanel drivers). It is certainly worth a try to re-install the drivers for the facepanel, though we are in the midst of teching a festival, so that slows down our response time on these things.

Thanks again for the helpful suggestions. We will get back to you as soon as we uncover more information.
