ION colors for LED's

Using Chauvet QWash 560Z LED fixtures which are rgbaw.  When selecting any color from either the color wheel or a particular gel when the fixture is homed; which is all 5 led colors at full, the color is selected but very washed out because White remains at full.  Amber changes, white remains at full always.

When making white 0 then the colors seem to match.  Is that normal?  Does white always have to be off first?  I would think that picking a color would set all 5 led choices to the appropriate ranges which for the most part would set white to 0.
