iRFR iPad App wireless requirement

Right now I have the Net3 remote, which I guess is a radio remote.  If I want to get the iPad app, then I can't use the radio receiver for the Net3 remote to interface wirelessly to the ion console, correct?  I need to set the ion console up on its own wireless router.

I find that the Net3 remote sucks batteries dry within a very short time, which is why I want to try the app.  Is this common, or is my experience abnormal?

Also, if the iPad will need to be set up on the separate network, then what do you guys do if you need to access the internet or something else on another network?  Do you just switch networks back and forth when needed?

I haven't researched this as much as I should have, but hopefully you guys can let me know your experiences.
