ION flashing LED's

Anybody want he show file?

Running latest software.  Have conventionals, 8 Chauvet QWash 560Z LED's, 2 Robe 575AT Color Spots, 3 Blinders, 6 Robe 250 AT Color Spots, Haze, Chauvet LED Sparklite Drapes patches as 8 generic RGB's

Running 40 cue lists assigned to 40 faders; 20 lists/faders are recorded as the drape colors only and the other 20 lists/faders are all other fixtures (No conventionals).  Some cue lists have only one cue and some have 3, 4, 5 or 6 cues

The QWashes haven't been recorded in any cues yet, but they are patched as channels 311 thru 318

Two things are happening:

1) When I hit Clear Sneak Enter the 8 QWashes (fixtures themselves) flash white on and off quickly.  Also see them flash in Capture

2) When I tap the top bump button (Stop/Back) on any of the cue lists on faders the QWashes will 95% of the time flash on then off.  Sometimes they don't, but most times they do.  As I keep tapping the top bump when Live Flexi is in Show Channels spreadsheet view one time out of ten I see channels 311 through 318 very quickly flash on and off on the screen even though they aren't showing as Show Channels because they aren't Show channels yet.

So the QWashes will flash on and off about 95% of the time but the screen will only show the channels flash on and off about 1% of the time when pressing the top bump button.  This happens on any of my 40 faders / cue lists

Can't wait to see what is causing this one, especially since I have three back to back shows coming up in a week involving these very cues.  (They are all concert shows)

  • Is it possible that those channels were previously recorded into your cues as something else? I don't know if this would work for you, but you could try deleting those channels in patch, which should remove all show data for those channels.
  • Funny you should ask.  Actually to make it deeper:

Originally I had Robe 575XT washes patched as channels 301 through 306 at 353 thru 448.  I'm replacing those with the Chauvet QWash led's in all my shows but because there are insufficient addresses for the Washes on Universe 2 AND the Robe's as well (along with all other fixtures on 2), I assigned the Chauvets the same start address 353 at the original Robes.  The Chauvets end now at 472.  Of course that unpatched the Robe's but they still showed on the patch as fixtures, just no addresses.

I thought maybe that might have something to do with it so I actually deleted channels 301 through 306 from the patch.  Now there is no sign of Robe 575XT washes at all on the patch.

    That didn't fix it.

Those Chauvet channels; 311 thru 318 have never been used to my knowledge for anything.  If I delete them now then that will remove the Chauvet QWashes.  Do you think I should do that then re-patch them back to those channels?

Also lmk if you would like to see the show.

  • Hi Jeff,

A couple things I see looking at the file offline.

You say that the Q washes aren't in any cues, but from what I can tell, 311-318 have varying color information recorded into lists 1 thru 20 cue 0.5 and then come to 51 percent in the Q 1 of those lists.

The home value in patch for Intensity on the Q washes is 255. Do these lights have an inverse dimmer? So 255 is off and 0 is full? I would think that if they were actually homing at full, you would have noticed them all always being on, but its odd to me that they are set to home to 255. I could see this being part of the Sneak issue if they are sneaking to full, but then being overridden by something else

Looking at your color pallets 9 and 10 with the color mix mode. These two CP's have 255 values in them for the RGBAW channels as well as the appropriate value for color mix channel. I don't  know the fixture, but if Color mix has value, does this override the RGBAW settings? I'm guessing it does, but I'm  wondering, since Color Mix is set to Snap mode, if you are fading from Full red to "CP 10", are you seeing the "fade" (in 0) to white before the unit realized that it is supposed to be overriding in Color Mix mode, and then it snaps to what it is supposed to be doing?

All just observations. Not sure if any of it is actually causing the problem, but hopefully its a bit useful.

  • Hey Benjamin,

Thanks for the observations.  Here is the show I worked on briefly tonight.  Still needs some tweaking but hopfully the problems are gone.

When I mentioned I was having problems even though none of the QWashes were in the show, I forgot that the one I sent you did have them in cues.  I did have the same problems though when they weren't in cues, but that may well have been due to that intensity issue in the library

Regarding Capture showing "F" when everything is off.  It appears to be a bug or something in their fixture personality.  They have a value called "Light" seperate from Intensity.  When the fixtures are Homed that "Light" value goes to full but intensity goes to 0.  (I changed the default to 0 in the ION library)  I have sent them an inquiry as to what Light and Intensity do.

Anyway, the values for the QWash fixtures were in the library.  The fixtures are basically temporary until one of the upcoming software updates, then they will actually be officially in the Library.  For now at least I was able to edit the QWash with intensity at 0 and away went my flashing fixture on Clear Sneak Enter and I also dont see any of them appear on the Live display any longer when tapping the top bump stop/back buttons.

Regarding the color palettes.  Yes I believe the Color Mixes override whats set in RGBAW because no matter what I set RGBAW the output of the fixtures remains at whatever color mix I select; ie: 3200k.  But I know I'm pretty sure it's a good practice to zero out values when using macros like that, so I re-did #9 and #10 with RGBAW values at 0 and only using color mix macros.

One other thing.  If you open up the Fixtures in patch - I guess it's the favorites (black and yelloe) screen and start scrolling down the list you will see some that have Edit in white (of course they are copies or fixtures able to be edited), some have Lib Update in gray.  Those that I already updated, and one SGM Victory fixture that has Lib Update in white.  I click on it to update, get the confirm screen, click OK but it never grays out.  Know anything about what causes that?

  • Talked with tech support and it was discovered the QWash fixtures I had in the show file were the original beta fixtures sent to me before being put into the library permanently.  They did have the intensity set at 255 default.  Because they were betas installed as temps they were editable, therefore I changed the intensity to 0 and the problems went away.  Aparantly when using clear, sneak, enter it sends the fixtues to default for a moment and since the fixtures defaulted at 255 intensity thats why they flashed quickly.

Also for those of you who are still learning fixture patching I thought I would share this with you.  Of course most of you already know it.

When in Patch - Fixtures, the first screen that comes up is the black screen with a list of fixtures in white.  I call it the "pre-favorites screen" for lack of knowledge.  When you scroll down that list you will get options for each fixture to Copy, Delete or Update Lib (shows white when available).  You will also sometimes get options to Edit.  I believe an Editable fixtures is one that is not permanently in the library.  It would be one you copied, customized, hand made, etc.

When you get the option to Update Lib and you choose that, a screen will come up giving you some warnings and asking if you are sure you want to update.  Once you select OK the Update Lib changes to gray, sometimes.  I found some fixtures that remained in white.  Don't know why.

Anyway once you have updated the library I was told you need to go back to patch (click "return" at the bottom of the favorites screen) and re-patch that/those fixture(s) you updated by typing their channel(s), going to manufacturer, picking the fixture and you're done.  DON'T pick the fixture from the Favorites screen as they are the same ones that showed in the "pre-favorites screen".  You need to go through Manfctr.

Re-Patch especially if they are going to replace a customized fixture you have patched, which was my case.  Even though I updated the QWash fixture I hadn't realized the fact that what I had patched was a customized fixture and therefore update lib only updated the library, not the patch.  Once I re-patched the QWash it then had the proper intensity default and the problems were gone.

    Any comments, corrections, etc. appreciated!!!
