Two IONs, One network, Multiple Universes

I'm working in two brand new spaces that share a network. ION #1 in the bigger space has universe 1, and ION #2 in the smaller space has Universe 2. This also means that when I add movers I will be using Universe 3 with ION #1.

How do I prevent a programmer or board op from accidentally using universes 1 and 3 in the small space, and from using Universe 2 in the large space? Is there a way to block certain dimmers on each of the consoles?

  • In the shell you should be able to set up allowed output ranges for each of the consoles.

To get to the shell, go to your browser and select "Exit Ion" (Not shut down console...)

Once you're at the primary screen, select "Settings"

    Go to the "Network" tab.

Scroll down. By default outputs 1-60k something are enabled. Disable this range, then add in 1-512 and 1024-1536 on your ION#1

Do the same on ION#2, except add ranges 513-1024 only.

    Hope this helps!

  • Yes, have IT look at it.

I'd bet there's a Mid-Atlantic rack somewhere where all the Cat5 cables terminate to a RJ45 patch panel, then patch cables to a switcher and out to the consoles and dimmers, as well as any Ethernet taps around the spaces (hopefully).  It's really as simple as identifying which console, dimmers and taps belong to space A, which to space B, separating and adding a separate switcher for the 2nd space and plugging all those E-Net cables to that switch.  Not a particularly difficult or expensive process.

If ETC provided the switcher, I'd recommend purchasing a duplicate, as it makes it easier for their tech folks to troubleshoot.

  • If you do have IT look at it, don't let them try to hook it up to their building network though.  The will generally tend to want to do that so that they can control it.  That would be a bad idea....
