ION "How To" advice

Here is a show I'm currently workng on.  There are things in it I'm sure you will question.  There are definately things I question and that's why I am posting it, for questions and discussion.  I can't find helpful answers in the manual so i thought i'd post.  About the first half of setting cues I used copy to for repeated cues and changed the labels but then I switched to GoToCue Enter then record with a new cue number.  Don't quite know which is a better method.

Anyway here are the topics refering to the PSD:

1) there are a lot of + signs in the Flags column.  I know + means discrete timing however I understood that to apply to the Timing section; F C B, I.  What do they mean in Flags and of course how to modify them?

2) What are the L Flags for in the mv column?

3) When there is an assigned specific time in F C or B how can that be removed?  For instance say there is a time of 3 for Beam but that is no longer wanted.

4) The Dur column, as I understand it, is the total of an assortment of times across the cue.  It's unclear how that total is derived as some cues only have a time for Int up (say 5) and the Dur is 5.  Some may have Int Up 5 and Color 5, but Dur is still 5.  Others may have 5 accross Int Up, F C AND B and Dur is still only 5.  When it's important for a cue to run a specific time but the Dur is twice or more in length, the cue then isn't running in that time.  So how to find out what specific times are being applied where.

Also I know if a cue is marked that the mark time also needs to run to get fixtures ready for the next cue but for the life of me I can't figure out how to effectively modify that.  I checked the settings and Mark timing is disabled.  I tried using specific timing for specific marked cues but it didn't seem to change the "dur".  What has happened in this show is some cues need to be completed faster than the referenced cue takes to run and mark.  I hope this makes sense.

5) There are + signs in the Int Up and Int Down areas.  Again I realize this means discrete timing for that part of the cue, but how do I find out what that timing is so it can be modified and what specifically it meant?  For example how long was it and was it a Delay?

Any discussion will be much appreciated.

    Answering Questions 1 &2:

The 'MV' - M on top of V represents moves. You will find two letters in this column:
D means there is a dark move happening during that fade.
L means there is a live move happening during that fade.

+ Means both live and dark moves are happening

If you find the '+' in the 'M' Column that means that the cue is both marking and reference for a mark.

     Question 3:

    If you press the [Time] key it will toggle through all of the different times you can assign to the Cue;

    Cue X Time

    Cue X Down Time

    Cue X Focus Time

    Cue X Color Time

    Cue X Beam Time

    Cue X Intensity Time

You can either set the time you would like or press [Enter] to set it back to default timing (It also gets rid of times in columns which don’t have anything happening in them, you’ll see if they don’t have a white box around them. I like to get rid of them as it looks neater)

    Question 4:

The Duration will add up all the time taken needed to execute the complete cue, including Delays & Marks. Be aware that if a light is marking on the same cue it is going out in, the mark will hold till it has hit 0 then mark, using the focus/color/beam time of the cue/or the default marking time if you’re using that setting. If you are using discrete time the timer will also take that into account. The timer takes the longest time for each of these functions and adds them up.

    Question 4b:

Attached is a .pdf I wrote just explaining mark timing. It might be a little out of date, but it probably is still true.5228.Marking a Part.pdf

    Question 5:

[Shift] [Time] I think is what you’re after, it should toggle the display to show discrete timing.

  • Thanks for the info.  I ran thru these tonight.

Q3 - the Time key does toggle however that's not what I was asking.  How can I find out what times have been assigned to all the parameters?

Q4a - Same as 3 - how do I see what all the hidden, so to speak times are that cause the duration to be what it is and how can they be edited or deleted?

and thanks for the file.  Haven't had a chance to open it  but I know it will be very helpful on marking.

Q5 - When in Live Table spreadsheet  view active channels using Shift Time briefly makes all spreadsheet boxes go blank except showing all m's.  What view/display are you refering to?

  • Hey Jeff, I'm a little unsure as to what you're asking:

When you press [Shift] [Time] it should display the discrete timing you have assigned to a channel within the tombstone. If you have assigned discrete times to individual attributes, you may need to change the format of your channel display. You can do this by pressing [Format]

I believe you're talking about discrete timing here so excuse me if I'm telling you how to suck eggs?

If you want to get rid of a discrete time you can do:

    [Channel][Attribute][Time][Enter]

oh and you will need to [Update] the cue after you have done that if you are working in live.

Q5, change you're Live Table to the either of the other two displays using [Format] That should hopefully solve Q3 & 4.

  • Also if you say [Shift] +[TIme] and then add in [Flexi] (while still holding shift and time down) this should now just show channels with discrete timing!

I've not tried this on Ion since shift was added but I'm guessing this the way to get to time flexi.
