Calibrating Scrollers on the same Channel

Hey guys,

I ran into an issue the other day, and I feel like it's something that others have had to deal with before as well. I have a couple instances where I have two or three scrollers (and their associated dimmers) being controlled by the same channel. Each scroller has its own RAM channel/DMX address, but they're all soft patched into the same channel in the console.

Is there any way to calibrate each scroller independently? I have two channels where one of the scrollers is perfectly centered when the other is slightly off. I managed to make this work by finding the "least bad "setting that made both frames reasonably centered, but this would not have been possible if the second scroll was further off. I realize that the normal operation of the console is to not allow individual control of fixtures patched together, but is there any way to calibrate one scroller independently of another patched to the same channel?

Thanks!

  • Hi Michael,

The console conceptually treats each channel as a single beam of light, and thus treats anything with a Scroller parameter as being one and the same (and thus controlled together).  There isn't a way to separate it out for different calibration as-patched.

Besides the happy medium workaround, here are a few thoughts for working around what you're seeing:

    1. Create a custom scroller fixture profile. Instead of calling the parameter Scroller, use Scroller 2. This will give it a different parameter to work with and should allow you to calibrate separately.

    2. Patch the scrollers in separate channels with a virtual (and not patched) intensity. This will still let marking work, while allowing separate control.

  • Are there any plans to fix this for a future release? A custom profile with "Scroller 2" works fine when you have just two, but what about when you have more? Patching as separate channels is reminiscent of working on an Express!

  • A work around would be to record all of your scroller frames as colour palettes. Record your show using these palettes and this will allow you to calibrate with them and update throughout the show at the same time, with the added bonus of them being laid out on a direct select.

Edit - You may need to have for example 3 different colour palettes for the same colour. Maybe a bit messy.
