express 24/48 no dmx output

hi folks i'm new here, just wondered if anybody could give me some advice please.

i've been given an express 24/48 for free but it has a small problem, it appears that there is no dmx signal coming out of the first universe at all, but the second one works as normal, when i change the settings so that both outputs have the same signal i get the data for dmx adresses 1-512 on the second output(as i would expect) so this leads me to thing it's an electronic problem rather than a software problem, is there any common faults which occur on these which might cause the output to cut off completely?? i remember changing a small 8 pin opto-isolator on an avolites console a while ago which was showing a similar fault.

 thanks, tom

  • It sounds like a bad output chip on the DMX 1 port.

There is no opto-isolator circuit on Express, the chip functions as the "fuse".  The DMX 1&2 ports and the RFU port all use the same chip.

Since it's a free-be, I'd suggest removing the brick - I.E. the back electronics section and swapping chips to see if that is the problem.  Pay VERY close attention to how the brick gets removed as it's a *** getting it back on.

If it's a bad chip, an ETC dealer can get a replacement, or if you are not planning on using an RFU or port 2, then use that chip instead..
