non-rich formatting doesn't hold line breaks
Are you using the Plain Text or Enhanced editor?In Plain Text I think line breaks need to be added manually using HTML tags.
Ah I see yes! I did have enhanced set in my settings, but I see that only applies to new posts, it seems to ignore that settings when replying and you have to change manually.

It appears that the system is designed such that the quick reply editor does not use the enhanced editor and thus omits line breaks.
To preserve line breaks, click the use rich formatting button before posting. This is on a long term list to be investigated further.
