If you are the author (or have edit rights) and change the stickiness of a post, you have, by editing it, read the post.

I think I know what he means. For example in the Eos Beta Forum when a new build is released the old build stickied thread is un-stickied. At that point the old sticky thread shows up as unread/new post even though I already read it when it was originally posted.
