How best to stop effects in time?

So I use EOS for live music busking. I have a showfile that references many cuelists to create looks on stage. All my cue lists are pretty granular so I can control each aspect of the lights on stage. I’m having a bit of a problem with exploring a new functionality.

what I’d like to do is be able to take the current state of my rig at any given moment and save it and then replay it. The idea would be let’s say there’s a song, and I get a really nice verse look going, I wanna save it and recall it later for the second verse.

So I figured out two ways to do this and both have their advantages and setbacks.

Method 1: playing a cue. So in this method I use a macro to say group 1000 (all above stage fixtures) make manual enter. Group 100 make absolute enter. (because I do have macros that rewrite pallettes) group 1000 record only cue 2/1. Enter. Group 1000 effect copy to cue 2/1. enter. (not sure how necessary this step was, but there were a few times the group order of effects did not properly copy over.) group 1000 make manual enter. Group 1000 make absolute. Enter. Sneak enter.

then to replay it you just hit go on the cue and when you’re done you can release the cue list. The advantage is if you make the cue 2/ a higher priority, you can actually use your usual busking magic sheet in an almost staging mode to set up the look you’ll eventually release the cue to. However you cannot make any changes to cue 2/1 without completely releasing it. The issue is when I release the fixtures, especially LED fixtures performing an intensity effect, they will take longer than expected to fully release and spend some time without any color data causing them to go “home” color for a moment, very unsightly.

method 2 fixes this issue but creates its own. I used the same macro to record but for play back I use a macros that says go to cue 2/1. Group 1000 make manual enter. Group 1000 make absolute enter. Release cuelist 2/. Group 1000 effect recall from 2/1. Enter. Now I still have total control of my magic sheet to make changes and edit live. And when I am done with certain aspects I can sneak the data out except I also have to stopeffect. the issue is that the effects need to be stopped manually since they aren’t sourced from a cuelist and all my effects reference cue/release time for the exit time, so they can only come to an abrupt stop.

Does anyone attempt similar behavior, and what work around with desk limitations have you found ?

  • In conclusion, here are my feature requests from this whole thing.. some are completely luxury as there are work arounds: allow cuelists to have their own release time.

    1. Instead of release time being console wide, make it so I can apply a release time to a single cue list. Yes, I know you can write a macro to change the console release time at will but it also makes sense to just have it be assignable on a cuelist by cuelist basis. In way I am using it, releasing a cuelist is just as much a “cue” as anything else.

    2. Make it possible to change the default sneak time via macro. I realize yes you can always enter sneak time x to sneak at a certain time, but if I’m already changing my release time, why can’t I also change my sneak time and have it ready the next time I hit sneak.

    3. grab active effects to replicate them exactly as they are playing. This one is surprising to me. You can hit effect and look at all effects running, but you have to type the individual effect to grab it. There’s no select all for effects. In my instance the group 1000 fx copy to isn’t exactly reliable. I want, no matter what or how many effects are playing, to be able to quickly grab them and have them retain their channel order and rate and size information when I grab them and store them somewhere, then I will get the same effect, channel order, and custom rate and size when I play it back.

    4. manual times for the stopeffect command. Exit and entry times are set on a basis of the effect unless you direct it to follow cue/release. So if have an effect playing that’s not from a cuelist, but if the effect is told to follow cue timing for entry and exit, that means the only way I can stop it is doing a hard stopeffect command which is only a time of zero.
