File under: That's a great Idea! - ETC NET Boxes

It would be a very cool thing if the ETC NET Boxes (with the small Net switches and A/C) had a keystone knock-out on the cover so you only had to knock it out to mount a net jack.  It sure beats opening up the box to gain net access, or having to mount a single jack (and box & pipe, etc)

  • l would second that request.  It would make small systems easier to connect to.

  • I like it.  Remember you can also plug into the front of the Paradigm processor.

  • If you have a Paradigm processor on the project.

The typical smaller one I'm used to seems to have an Ion and a couple of small dimmer racks, maybe a net output somewhere in the catwalks, but may  not have an architectural system involved.

Usually when Paradigm gets added, the systems seem to get just a little bigger and will then have a rackmount switch.

  • Bruce,

That is a fantastic idea. They only downside is that I usually plug my laptop into the unused edison outlet inside. But its a great idea.

  • That is a great idea! I have just requested this to be added by the engineering department, so barring any problems you'll start seeing this in production Net Boxes soon.

    Thanks all for your input!

    Tom

  • I was just realizing that yesterday when I was plugging in my laptop as well.  But for 99% of the time.

So the question is, do you make the NET box kit include a Keystone RJ45 to RJ45 male tail to just plug in the switch?  Does that violate CAT5 or CAT6 as specified?

  • You could just use one of the RJ45 Receptacle to receptacle inserts that are sometimes put into the patch bays for larger systems to allow for a internal device (i.e. an ERn) have a patch cable to the outside switch.  Then there's just a patch cable inside the net box and a receptacle outside.

And while the Keystone to RJ45 tail probably isn't allowed via the CAT5/CAT6 spec, I bet it would work.
