Nomad receiving OSC commands from another application on the same device?

Alright, before you reply with the "it is not ideal to have your nomad computer and your lab computer be one and the same." I'm wondering if it is possible to make Nomad listen for OSC commands from the localhost.

This thought experiment came from a recent rig I put in where I had two laptops, one running nomad and one running Qlab. Qlab was triggering the console via OSC and everything was working perfectly. The rig was so small, and the backstage space for the computers was so small that it would've been better, although not ideal, to run it all from the same computer without having to manage 2 separate computers (that and the operators for the run of show were not savvy and I want to make the show as automated and idiot proof as possible).

I couldn't make it work so I thought I'd turn to you, the collective EOS braintrust.

I got Qlab to send the ping command to the eos if I put the actual IP address of the computer in the OSC setup field in Qlab rather than localhost. I still don't suggest you do it because background applications have a tendency to respond slow or not at all until they are brought to the foreground unless they are made to operate properly in the background.

Andrew, what about if you don't have an IP address (laptop is not on any network)? But ultimately you're right, neither software were designed to work as background processes.

If the console doesn't have an ip address I don't think Qlab will do it. I tried it on a mac nomad and the localhost would not pass info back to the other application. When I put in the IP address it worked. I would suggest a mac mini or mini pc for 2nd computer and share a monitor/mouse/keyboard if space is at a premium.

the double mac mini is exactly what we ended up doing. With one plugged into the HDMI port and the other in the DVI port and it works well. Of course, my worry is that since the performers are their own backstage crew and there is no dedicated operator that it doesn't feel quite idiot proof enough for me.

Following this I got it to work fine, just have to make sure Qlab is sending to an IP Address rather than localhost. Failing a wifi connection being around I would just hotspot to a phone and turn your data off, as long as it has an IP. Not really any lag either but I am running them ion the same screen at the moment so neither is really "background."
