control of groups via a channel

Is it possible to assign a channel to control a previously recorded group on the Ion

  • no, i don't think so. for a channel to control other stuff you would have to patch them to this one channel... what would you like to achieve?

  • I've got 3  basic RGB Led units in my rig. I'm running them via channels rather than as fixtures as this is probably the fastest way to create colour washes "on the hoof". Although I have easy control over each individual unit, it would also be quite useful to have control over them as a group. Obviously a sub master would be the best solution, but as I have alluded to in a previous post, I've got my fader wing set to channel mode. I had thought of patching them as a group on one channel, but as an address cannot be controlled by more than one channel I would lose the individual control. It's not a major problem as the % readouts on the fader wing will allow me to match the individual channels accurately, it would just have been marginally quicker if I also had group control.

Its my first time out with an ION after using the Element and Frog desks for small scale studio stuff and I'm basically just experimenting with different ways of setting up the board to suit my way of programming.

  • Hello,

We store our groups always under the first channel number.

    f.e.: The channels 310, 410.510 and 610 always play as a group. So we save "310 +410 +510 +610 record group 310"

so you can control a group with a channel. " group 310"

    regards Jörg

  • I suspect you now want to reconsider using the faders in channel mode.  I never do this as I lose the flexibility of using a fader as a sub, effect or pllayback.

It's very easy to dump the channels into subs, just got to Blind and make sure you have all the subs "created" by typing (in blind) "Sub, 1, Thru, Thru, XX" (for the last fader you need to have as a sub.

While still in blind, select "Sub 1, Enter" and type "1, Full, Enter" which records channel 1 on Sub 1.  Then hit Next to recall Sub 2, and do a "2, Full, Enter", repeat thru all the channels you need on Subs

  • Will this method exclude fixture parameter information from the created subs?

  • if you choose to exclude them - yes!

record sub 1 Enter will take the whole output
record only sub 2 Enter will take all manual (=red font) values (record only is pressing record twice if there's no such key on your console)
Chan 1 record sub 3 Enter will take everything from channel 1
Chan 1 Intens record sub 4 Enter will take channel 1's intensity parameter only (you get Intens either from the ML Controls by clicking the respective parameter name or on consoles other than an Element from the parameter tiles in the CIA)
Intens record sub 5 Enter will take the intens parameters of all channels
    - Focus Color Beam record sub 6 Enter will take everything but the parameters belonging to the categories Focus Color Beam.

please note, that once you have (maybe mistakenly) recorded unwanted parameters into a sub, to remove them you must either delete the whole sub and re-record again, or you need to go to Blind Sub 1 Enter and edit out all parameters you don't want with e.g. Chan 1 Color At Enter. simply recording something over an existing sub will not remove all data from it.

    does that help?
