DMX Hookup

Using an ION with 84 Dimmers. Have just put in DMX Splitters & Line for same. Would like to leave existing line to the Dimmer Rack alone & run the other Universe with LEDs, Movers, etc. Not having any luck so far. Have a 7 -15 ch LED setup alongside the console, so accessing the fixture not a problem.

since the ION doesn't have the The DMX ports labelled as Universe 1 or 2, all I"ve been able to determine there is that Universe 2 is full??? ( Based on console response when asked for available addresses in Univ-2).

All input welcome.

Also, how does one put a Cue on the wheel without entering every Ch in the Cue.

 Cheers,

 Harry

  • an ion has dmx ports that are labelled DMX 1 and DMX 2. they default to universes 1 and 2. to make sure this hasn't been changed, go to the shell (Displays > Browser > Exit) and there to Settings > Local I/O. at the top you should see the dmx starting addresses of both ports, by default those are 1 and 513.

when in patch, select a channel and then in the CIA you should see tiles with numbers starting at 1. those are the universes. click on 2. left of it you see tiny numbers 513 to 1024. do they have a black or grey background? each number that is black is empty.

have you made sure, that you have the correct personality and mode for your LED?

and last but not least: what do you mean with Cue on the wheel? and how do you want to get channels into cues without entering them?

  • Expanding a bit on Ueli's post,

Not sure what the purpose of the splitters serve.  In a simple setup as you've described, you would usually just run the Ion universe 1 output to the house dimmers, then run universe 2 to the LED's and movers.  That's a common setup but you do want to make sure the Ion outputs are configured correctly as per Ueli's post.

Then, needing to patch the desired channels for the house dimmers onto addresses for universe 1, the syntax would be (from patch and assuming the first/left column is channels) "1, @, 1, /, XX, Enter".  The 1 and / syntax tells the console you are patching to an address on universe 1.  If you use a "2, /" syntax it knows universe 2.  Note that you don't need to do the "1, / " syntax for remaining universe 1 channels as Ion assumes you are still working in universe 1.

Then patch LED's and movers, first telling Ion.that the channel is going to control moving lights.   As example, when I use my 6 Martin MAC 700's I type "Ch, 301, thru, 306, Enter" then find the Type button, scroll to  and select Martin, MAC700 Profile to let Ion know what fixture it's dealing with (if there's a fixture profile, Ion then knows how many address to allocate per fixture). I would then patch as "Ch, 301, @, 2, /, 1, Enter".  If I had add'l 700's I could then do "Ch, 302, Thru, 306, @, 2, /, Next".  Ion would then know to allocate 23 address per fixture and would complete the patch assignments.

    Ditto for the LED's.

The question as to Cue on a wheel, I assume you want to grab all the channels in a cue on the wheel.  The easiest method is using Select Active Enter, which grabs as manual, all active channels.  You can use the wheel to adjust levels.

  • Good morning & thank you. I'll check through that info shortly.

Re the wheel - If you already have q & want to take the whole thing up or down except a channel or two, can you not capture with the wheel, make the change & rerecord?

     Cheers,

     Harry

  • Select  Active, -, 1, -, 2, Enter

Selects all active channels on the wheel except 1 & 2 (thus the minus 1, minus 2 syntax).

Alternately use Select Active, minusing out any desired channels, then give a level "@, 55, Enter".  Or Out.

  • Have rechecked the "Shell". All in order there.

     Universe1 has 1 - 84 used(House Dimmers), the rest is empty

Universe 2 has 513 - 625 empty, the rest used. Why that would be We don't know.

Perhaps a previous attempt to patch something( which has only been done a couple of times to get RBG on 4 or 5 simple  LED units.

We did the test lamp to fire on a single channel, but white only. No individual stuff. It's an ETC Lustre in RBG +7 mode.

  • What is the fixture addressed to, and what address is the fixture patched to on the Ion?

  • you can check what's on those addresses. go to patch, press Format. this will change the first two collumns to be Address and Channel instead of Channel and Address. the display is sorted by addresses now. you can page down or type 626 (the console will insert the word Address on its own) Enter. this brings you to the first address in your second universe that's supposedly occupied. you can now check on the screen what channel this is patched to.

  • Good morning. We have a much better understanding of what we have to do re our hookup & Patching. Able to work in both Universes & have LEDs functional.

Our thanks to all for your assistence.
