Definitive answer on Ion Touchscreens

Hi All,

I'm in the process of purchasing an Ion, however I'm receiving conflicting information on the touchscreen model. Both Jeremy and the ETC Knowledgebase spec an ELO 1915L. My dealer however has specced an ELO 1928L, and tell me this is the model ETC have advised.

As far as I can tell (and I've called the UK distributor to confirm) the 1915L has no DVI input; only VGA. Doesn't this make it unsuitable for the Ion? It's also a special order item with limited availability; I was quoted 3-5 weeks.

Rather confused, so some clarification would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

John

  • In Europe we use :

Elo TouchSystems 1928L --- 19" Touch Monitor with VGA + DVI (this model has different versions, one of which only has VGA - so read the specs on that product!)

So we purchased one and it works fine. Just have to be careful because that model number has 3x different versions, one of which doesnt have a dvi output.

But maybe Anne could add more to this ... ?

  • The word I received last Friday from ETC support was:

At this time, we do not officially support any touchscreens other than
    the ELO screens listed below:

    ELO1715L 17" touchscreen monitor (E537168)
    ELO1915L 19" touchscreen monitor (E607608)

That being said, the helpful folks at ETC supplied some information I needed in order to install unsupported drivers for GVision P17BH monitors on our Ion.

Well, if the 1928L is indeed the correct monitor, I think the correct part number should be E874209.

I can't find any mention of a model without DVI... all in that range seem to have it. The only differences seem to be Accu-Touch/Intelli-Touch/No Touch, and beige/dark grey options.

  • I would recommend Accu-Touch. This is what we use at ETC Ltd.

E874209 Dark Grey or E313143 Beige both have DVI input and work with another DVI Flatscreen that may not be touch-based.

  • Elo sells MANY different configurations of touch screens. The Elo model numbers are not very helpful. The part numbers that Erik listed are verified to work with Eos and Ion.

Here are the requirements from the Eos/Ion side...

    1. Must support 1280x1024 resolution (this rule out all of the 15" dispalys.)

    2. Must use Elo AccuTouch touch screen

    3. Must include DVI input.

    Hope this helps...

  • Does the Ion support enough functions to merit 2 touchscreens?  I can't find adequate information within the manual.  I have read that the console has drivers to run 2 touchscreens, but for the cost, what is the benefit?  The demonstrations I viewed all used 1 VGA and 1 touchscreen.  My new console is on the way, I just have to settle on 1 or 2 touchscreens.

  • SBC,

Truth is, it's going to be up to you.  Bearing that in mind, I'll give you my 2 cents on the topic.  For the record, let me state that I have hardly used a touchscreen with Ion and have certainly never used two.  So in terms of personal experience, I don't have much to offer.  Knowing what I do about the features of Ion however, I can tell you the obvious places that touchscreens are useful

Direct selects and Virtual Faders can be used in Ion.  It is immensely useful to have a touchscreen to use these.

At the same time, the CIA has a parameter display that a touchscreen can be very useful for selecting filters, also some people prefer to be able to navigate within the browser using fingers instead of the navigation keys (or a mouse).

Bearing these features in mind, you have two separate screens that both have "cause" to desire a touchscreen

Fortunately, the [Swap] key allows you to swap monitor displays at any time with one button press.  If that isn't too inconvenient for you, then save the $ and plan on swapping when needed.

Thankfully, due to the narrow footprint of the console, mousing isn't nearly as inconvenient or awkward as it is with other consoles.  Which would be another argument against spending money on 2 touchscreens.  Just plan on mousing in your CIA.

That's what I have to offer.

  • Someone please tell me if I have surmised this correctly.

I have a very nice 17" VGA flat panel monitor with my Express console.  I want to use this monitor with my new Ion console.  This monitor will opbviously plug into the single VGA port.  I also want a 19" touchscreen monitor.  This would have to plug into the DVI port and therefore need to be the ELO 1928L E874209.

Could I inversely purchase the ELO1915L 19" E607608 (wich is VGA and much cheaper) and use that in the VGA port and purchase an affordable DVI monitor for the DVI output?

  • When using two different monitors, VGA and DVI, please keep in mind that monitor #1 will always be on the right side. You can use the [swap] key to swap ION screens between the monitors, but monitor #1 needs to be on the physical right, so your mouse tracks correctly. To set up either monitor as #1, I quote:

    http://community.etcconnect.com/forums/post/4719.aspx

"You may use 1 VGA and 1 DVI monitor. The above configuration is correct, the VGA goes into the blue VGA connector, while the DVI goes into the the DVI 'Y' cable. To set the VGA monitor as #1 - connect the DVI monitor to '2' on the 'Y' cable.  To set the VGA monitor as #2, connect the DVI to '1' of the 'Y' cable. But in all cases, monitor 1 will always be on the right."

  • We've just received a Elo touchscreen for our Ion. We bought model E874209 based on advice in this thread - do we need to do any specific for Ion to recognise it as a touchscreen? At the moment it is plugged into DVI output 1, and displays output from Ion OK, but the touchscreen part of it doesn't work.

Shell | Settings | General | Calibrate Elo Touchscreen produces Windows dialogue: "No Elo touchscreen found. Install a touchscreen and then run calibration program." How do I do that?

    Thanks,
    David

  • do you have the USB Cable properly inserted? check both the connection to the Monitor and

    the one to the console

  • Hi David-

I'll take a look to find out what model our ELO in the office is. I'm sure we just plugged it in and it worked!

    Will be in touch.

  • It is working OK now - in the end I swapped out the USB cable and Ion then saw the touchscreen part of the monitor.

Next question - how do I stop Ion beeping every time I touch the screen?

    Thanks, David

  • Give me a call, David - I can talk you through turning off the Elo sounds. For the inquisitive reader, it is a matter of going to the XPe shell and doing it manually.
